Cannot send Outgoing Email

Postby aks » Jun 09 04 5:45 am

For about 5 days now we cannot send outgoing email. I have called our ISP and they report no problems and are not doing any blocking.
We can receive email and we are able to go online. (DSL connection)
We currently have Wingate version 5.2.3.
Shortly before we were prevented from sending outgoing emails we were hit with some spamming.
My in-box was filled with a few hundred emails from Wingate telling me they blocked us from sending out emails due to them containing the I-Worm NetSky.q virus.
Message from Wingate was: "WinGate Datascanning blocked an email you sent".
Which is fine, it shows that it didn't send it out...but after a few days of this blocking suddenly we could not send out ANY emails.
Now the emails I'm getting are responses from the destinations that have had emails sent to them but blocked them...so I guess a few of those got threw wingate or someone is just using our @ names to send this virus infected emails.
I'm not sure what on Wingate would cause this blocking of the SMTP outgoing server.
Anyone else experiencing this or has in the past?
We are waiting on a call in from our IT guy that we use on a consulting basis, but just in case he still lags in calling in, I'd like to put this out there to see if I can get some help.
I also scanned the computer that houses the Wingate and our DSL and could not find the I-Worm virus on it.

You could turn on Debug logging for the SMTP server to see what appears there.

Outing Emailing problem

Postby aks » Jun 09 04 9:55 am

Thank you Larry...
Since I originally posted this message we discovered that Wingate is a bit of a space hog and found that our LOGS had HUGE text files that we have to delete every so often from the hard drive...we had found that we maxed out the computer that wingate is on and once we started freeing up space we were able to send out email...
I scanned computers and could not find the I-Work NetSky.q virus anywhere which is what the emails contained that were sent...
But its seems that wingate did let some of those emails throught because now I am getting responses from some of those destinations stating that the mail I sent was returned or rather denied access throught some of the servers that they were being sent to.
I'm also thinking that our problem may not be over with. We feel that we still probably need to find out how that happened in the first place.
Thankfully our old IT guy who we consult with will have his phone hooked up soon so we can get to the bottom of some of these problems...
