Remote desktop screen is black

Postby den04 » Apr 28 05 12:24 pm

Hi,

I have been using WinGate VPN successfully for about 6 months. After my ISP replaced my LAN modem at home I am unable to access my PC on the company LAN.

What I CAN do right now:
- connect to the company WinGate server. No problems like conflicting routes etc. are apparent in GateKeeper.
- ping my PC at the company (192.168.1.2) from my home PC (192.168.4.1)
- start the Remote Desktop Connection program in Win XP and click Connect which opens a new window...

The problem is this window it's black and does not open the log-in dialog box for the company's PC. The connection attempt is broken after ca. 20 seconds.

Some additional information:
My previous LAN router was not DHCP-capable, but the new one does and it's activated. My home PC is behind NAT. My collegues who use DHCP are able to connect properly (so the problem is caused by the new modem as nothing has changed on the server).

I would appreciate your assistance.
Thanks,
Patrick

When you said taht you could ping your office PC, did you refer to the actual ping command or the test operation in Gatekeeper?

Your problem might be related to the MTU issue - check out this thread: http://forums.qbik.com/viewtopic.php?t=3327

Ping

I used ping from the Windows command prompt. Should I do it from GateKeeper too?

No, it just enforces my opinion that it is probably MTU related - have you tried changing MTUs to see if makes any difference?

Yes, I tried changing the MTU. I tried manual settings of 400 and 1500 (min and max). No improvement.

I also tried Retest for my computer inside the company the LAN but it's "not accessible".

By the way, should my modem's DHCP setting be on or off?

I would suggest that there might be the issue of properly opening the hole in your new firewall - Wingate VPN uses UDP traffic for data chanel, so if you might need to open a firewall hole for it - however, normally it is not necessary because the initiator sends its first UDP packet thus making the firewall to create this hole automatically.

We have the new driver which helps people having similar problem - I can send it to you if you let me know what OS you are using. Also, if you send me your home machine system routing table (route print command output) it might help determine the cause of the problem.

OS is Windows XP SP2.

Will send the routing table on the weekend if the problem persists.
