Outlook Express and WS_FTP not working

Postby trialtester2999 » Aug 02 04 5:11 pm

Recently we have reinstalled Wingate 5.2.3 but without the NAT driver because there is a conflict between the NAT driver and the PPPoE adapter that we use. Internet is working out just find, but when you try to use either Outlook Express or WS_FTP they can not access the internet. We tried using the WGIC but it disconnects always and is frustrating to reconnect. Is there a proper way to configure the PC that is connecting to the wingate PC through proxy?

Problem: Outlool Express & WS_FTP can't access the internet, however IE can access the internet.

LAN Configuration: DHCP

We have a similar problem. We use WGIC, IE works fine, but no FTP program will work and neither will Outlook Express. We do not use the ENS. I cannot find any reason why wingate should be blocking these programs. FTP will not work either through IE. This has only happened since upgrading to Wingate 6.

Is anybody from support able to help with this problem?

Our company has upto 25 users connecting through wingate, which we upgraded to the latest version. With the problem stated which has stopped any user being able to connect to their email server via outlook express and also stopped vital automated ftp uploads from working it is vitally urgent that we resolve this problem as soon as possible.

I have tried various things, the firewall and ENS are not enabled so I cannot find any reason why wingate should not be allowing anything to conenct other than web pages through Internet explorer.

Thanks in anticipation.

You have to do one of the following:
Configure OE to use the POP3 proxy.
install NAT
Install Wingate internet client.

The POP3 proxy is your best bet, because then you E-mail is scanned for viruses, if the plug-in is installed.

To configure OE to use the POP3 proxy, set the IP of the Wingate machine as the incoming mail server. Then set the account username as userid#<ispmailservername>, all you really need to do is add the #mail.isp.com to the users id.
If the ISP SMTP server needs authentication you have to configure OE to authenticate to the ISP mail server using your email account settings, you can't use the option to use the POP3 settings to athenticate because you added the #mail.isp.com which won't be valid for your ISP's mail server.

For your FTP client you have to use the FTP proxy, NAT or Wingate internet client.

Many thanks,

Ihave been looking at the POP3 proxy, but wasnt too sure how to go about setting this up. I'll give it a try anyhow and report back.

With using NAT, this is installed but even in the previous wingate version 5 and now with 6 when it is enabled nothing works at all. Not sure if its something to do with the way winagte or the Win 2000 server is setup, but I'm no expert by any means. Even our server support company tech guys couldnt figure it out and they know less about wingate than I do.

We have been using WGIC, and this is installed on all client machines, and prior to upgrading to WG6, all machines and programs could conenct through, it is only since upgrading that Outlook Express and any form of ftp have stopped working. I tried upgrading the clients to version 6 also, but this had no effect. Any ideas why this isnt working using the WGIC?

Thanks

Nick

I reconfigured OW to use the POP3 proxy for incoming messages and that worked a treat!

I'm still unable to send outgoing messages though. the smtp server does not require authorisation although I tried that anyway. if i replace the smtp server with the wingate server IP then there doesnt seem to be anywhere where I can tell it what the actual smtp server is to connect to.

Seperately, I enabled the ftp proxy to allow clients to use it but it is still not accepting access (I am using ftp through IE).

Thanks

That's a good deal!

Most ISP's SMTP servers either require authorization or they accept relays from the IP addresses the ISP owns.
There are differnet settings in OE depending on the type of authorization the ISP requires.
Some ISP only require you to authorize with the POP3 server first, some require you authorize directly with the SMTP server.
If your ISP requires POP3 authorization first select logon to incoming mail server first.
If your ISP's SMTP requires direct authorization, select the option "Logon using" with the account details for your ISP account.
Do _not_ use the option "Use same settings as incoming mail server" because that seeting is the one you need for the POP3 Proxy.

Is this FTP server a local FTP server?

When you try to access the FTP site does it give you any messsage?

The reason i ask, there is an issue with IE, when you download files from an FTP site through a proxy (or at least with the Wingate proxy) You must have IE configured to use "Folder View for FTP sites" then use the FTP site url e.g. ftp://ftp.example.com/ then when you download a file, right click on the file and select "Copy to folder" Do not use "Open" if you have previously used open or tried downloading the file by double clicking it, you must clear the browser cache, first.

If you don't use folder view, IE converts the FTP site to HTML and when you try to open it with IE you get the message "220 WinGate Engine FTP Gateway ready" which will be saved in HTML format but using the filename and extension.
Then when you go try to open the file you will get the message that the file cannot be opened.

If you are using another FTP client such as WS_FTP it works as expected, I think the problem is with IE and the way IE renders the file.

Hi,

I havent yet tried the smtp but will report back on my success (or otherwise)

With the FTP. I will try this with WSFTP and see what happens.
Regards IE, it is set to use 'folder view for ftp sites' and I usually copy as you stated or drag and drop the files. Prior to upgrading, I had no problems with this method.

Thanks

Try the SMTP server configuration, it work on our side. If you use WS_FTP just go to the network options and input your server settings meaning use the setting of your wingate server.

Many thanks guys!
