Using old license on newer versions

Postby ChrisH » Aug 13 04 2:31 am

Hi,

I have a small sytem that I look after for a non profit group. They have a valid ver. 3 license key. I have upgraded them to ver 5.23 to gain the improvements to WG engine etc. I understand that some of the newer enhancements aren't available by doing this. They want to change the way they do email and as a result I added a POP3 proxy service. After adding the service WG indicated there was a conflict on Port 110 with the WG POP3 service and to stop it. However, since this is a ver 3 key the POP3 service doesn't show in GateKeeper and it's tough to shut it down. Is it a problem to have both running? Is there a registry workaround?

Thanks.

That should just be a warning, which should be able to be ignored.

Not sure how to get around it. We don't give that warning any more in WinGate 6.0

This post gives details on how to edit the registry to disable that service.

Yes that worked. Taking this one step further can this ver. 3 key work with ver. 6? I ask, because I tried and the license authentication came back with a checksum error. Thanks.

theoretically it should work :)

We have a few records of people activating v3 keys.

You could try submitting an email activation, then we can sort out if there are any problems

I purchased a license for unlimited users for version 5. Is that license valid for ver 6 or do I have to buy another license?

You can run version 6 with a version 5.x license, you just won't get the new features that we've added. You'll still have the features that you had with your version 5 installation, and you'll get the new engine and driver. If you want access to the new features then you'll have to upgrade your license. I suggest running WinGate with a trial license first to see how they work for you.

any info on pricing for the new version. Also I noticed on the website that the versioning scheme has changed. You no longer offer unlimited client versions. The changes concern me. I bought the version 5 license and have been battling with stability issues with wingate for over a year. Now the version is released and is supposed to address many of these issues and it is SOLD as an upgrade. And the product activation.....This is all sounding eerily familiar. Qbikrosoft? I must admit that the only reason I still use wingate is for the integrated user login with windows 2000 accounts. It allows me to manage usage by user group and makes it easier to track usage. However, the problems I have had to deal with (right now I have a scheduled script which restarts wingate every Friday night) have made this experience annoying at best and to be sold an upgrade for what is essentially a major bug fix for some serious program deficiencies is not helping to regain this customer's trust.[/b]

Not quite sold as an upgrade. Anybody, even somebody using a version 3 license key purchased 6 years ago can use WinGate 6.0. The featureset is restricted to what you had at the time you purchased your license, but you get all the bug fixes.

So, using your purchased version 5.x license with version 6 will give you the same functionality you have currently with the UI improvements, stability improvements and bug fixes since 5.2.3.

If you want access to the new features (Bandwidth control, etc.), then you will need to check the upgrade pricing. You can verify the price of an upgrade by entering your key information on the purchase page. You can check which features are available on which key type and version here http://www.wingate.com/wingate-licensing.php

Again, however, depending on when you purchased your version 5.x license you might be given a free upgrade to a version 6.0 license, which will include the new features.

The unlimited versions have had a small name change, they are now called

WinGate 6.0 Professional 250+ concurrent users
WinGate 6.0 Enterprise 250+ concurrent users
