Gatekeeper authentication

I am trying to setup my wingate installation to use windows authentication. However, when I select this option, and then shutdown gatekeeper, I am unable to log back in. I have checked that the gatekeeper administrator and system administrator accounts have the same password.

The message I am receiving is:
There was a problem connecting to the server. wrong protocol version. Make sure you are using compatible versions of wingate and gatekeeper

I am currently using version 5.0.7

Any help would be greatly appreciated

The error message implies that your using a version of GateKeeper that is different from the version of WinGate.

Is that a possibility?

I am using the same version of wingate and gatekeeper. It works fine until I change the authentication settings to use windows NT authentication. As soon as I change this setting and then logout of gatekeeper, I am unable to log back in.

Could it be anything to do with wingate not being able to access the local windows security database? (although the user I am logging in with has local admin rights)

I have also tried this process on my 2003 server, with the same results.

Sounds like two problems:

1. It's not letting you log in.

2. It's displaying a bogus error message.

Neither are helpful and I'm afraid I can't be either.

Only thing I can even think to try is see if another NT username/password will let you log in.

I have asked the local (AUS) support guys to see if they can come up with anything. I am wondering if it has anything to do with the fact that I am running winXP Pro on a 2003 server domain.

I have just migrated to Ver 5.2.2 wingate which ships with v5.0.0 gatekeeper, and I too get " Wrong protocol version when I try to log on to the gatekeeper. Did anyone resolve this problem

Right click on GateKeeper.exe and select properties.

The version should be 5.2.2.892.

If it's an older version will not work.

To extract just the GateKeeper.exe file:

open a command prompt
change to the directory where wgsetup.exe is stored
enter wgsetup /x
highlight gatekeeper.exe
click on OK

Gate keeper version in wingate directory is 5.2.2.892.
Even running from here generates the same problem.
if you go to help on the file menu (not the icon which does nothing) it quotes 5.0.0.

Any other thoughts?

Dear Larry thank you for you response I forgot to say so on my last post please forgive my bad manners.

You might well be interested in how I resolved the above issue.
I completely uninstalled wingate (lost my settings and passwords!!) using the windows uninstall facility and reinstalled and unticked the NT security item. I then signed on to gatekeeper with a blank password for Administrator. No wrong protocol message, but a lot of keying to put back all the user settings.

Possible cause is that a new installation puts the Wingate folder into the Programs Folder whereas the ungrade version puts everything into the existing C:\Wingate folder, there possibly then being two gatekeeper.exe on the system? Only a thought Stephen
