Wingate 6.0.1 and some problems

Postby Alexmillo » Sep 03 04 7:55 am

Hello

I'm running a network with 5 PC (Windows XP Pro SP1a) and a server (Windows 2003 server). The server, with Wingate server installed, has two NICs, one connected directly to a router for broadband (i have a 1280/256 DSL connection) and has a public IP, the other uses two IP (192.168.20.10 and 192.168.21.10). The other pc are: Two pc are using WGIC to connect to the internet (they are a sort of Internet Point for my guests, so I need to get authentication from them) and use wingate DHCP in the 192.168.20.x range; Three pc have static ip in the 192.168.21.x range (one of them is my personal pc). All of them point to the Wingate machine as gateway.

I recently upgraded my wingate to 6.0.1 and now I have some issues to fix:

1) when I log on Gatekeeper on the server machine (using terminal server) after a few seconds it drops the connection to wingate engine. Sometimes it happens only once, but it can happen many times in a row.

2) I'm experiencing a relative slower connection to the internet when i try to download files from i.e. my personal pc (I didn't try from the others at the moment). Just today i've tried to download winXP SP2 (260MB) from Microsoft, and from my pc it was impossible, because after some time it dropped the connection to Microsoft server. I tried many times without being capable to finish the dl. So I've tried directly from the server (via Terminal service) and I was able to download it at the first try! It was also faster than my pc (80-85 kb/sec vs 50-60 kb/sec).
So i've tried to dowload other files from other servers, just to check, and my pc wasn't able to dl nothing, while from the server it works fine.
So I think it could be something about NAT or similar, but cannot fix the problem.

3) The Wingate Client running on the other pcs is supposed to show the connection icon in the icon tray, but when I open Internet Explorer and get the authentication, it only starts to surf the internet, without showing any icon. This is quite important for my guests, because it shows them if they're still connected to the Internet or not.

Hope you can help me out of this !!

Bye

Refer to this post for information on the disappearing GateKeeper:

About the difference in speed, not sure. However, can help you with the WinGate Client. With the new version of 6, the behavior for non Enterprise / non configured installations is to not show the WinGate Dialup Monitor. This is a known bug, which will be resolved in our next maintenance release. If you have an Enterprise license, the "Track Connections" option in the centralised configuration actually turns the Monitor on, so you can see it.

Thanks for your reply.

About disconnecting Gatekeeper, it seems that's ok now. I followed the instructions, copied the .dll files from licensing management folder to DLL cache folder (the file 69cc632d-fefe-4803-b4ee-6b2c1f97c2af.dll in DLL cache was smaller than the one in licensing management folder). After this, Licensing Management in Help menu of GK was grayed out. I had to restart my server to get all to work. I also upgraded my licence from Pro to Enterprise.

About WGIC, maybe I'm missing something. As I already said, I've upgraded to Enterprise license, turned on the "Track connections" thing, but nothing happens on client computers. I've realized that iexplore.exe is missing in the system applications list of WGIC, can it be the cause ??
I've realized also that WGDM is activated from other apps, like Remote Desktop Connection, but not from Internet Explorer. Both apps aren't in the list, but apparently apps that normally have a local access (i.e. a simple network browsing) make WGDM appear, while apps that access external data (i.e. internet explorer) do not make it appear.

I've another question: is there a manner to inhibit users of a computer from toggling WGIC on or off ? I've managed to remove the WGIC access from users Start Menu, just to remove an easy access to it, but if someone knows "where to put his hands" can toggle it at will.

About speed, I'm not sure wingate is involved, but many people that use my computers complain that browsing is very slow, while from the server it's quite fast (as i said, i've a 1280/256 dsl connection). And i still have problems dowloading large files (not from the server). And all the computers use wingate to access to internet.
