How to List DHCP Clients?

Postby sudleyplace » Sep 13 04 6:24 am

I'm using 6.0.2 and would like to know how I can ask Wingate to list the DHCP clients to which it has issued an IP address.

Hi there

Unfortunately there is no place in GateKeeper to do this but everytime WinGate issues/leases an IP address a folder detailing what IP and which machine it issued to is created in the registry under,

HKEY_Localmachine\Software\QBIKSoftware\WinGate\DHCP\Leases

So effectively you could view which IPs have been leased from here.

Hope this helps

Some more information

Postby ngrayson » Sep 13 04 10:28 am

How interesting, last night i drafted but did not send an almost identical question when I was trying to find out what was happening in my network.

Perhaps the ability to view whats happening in DHCP is a nice future feature.

I have one question regarding reservation of addresses. I set up reservations based upon MAC address but this does not appear to work, I have had to reserve by computer name which does work.

Are you sure that MAC address reservation does work?
Is it case sensitive?
I used a "-" as an octet seperator is that valid?

Many thanks,
Neil

I see that list, but it clearly isn't current.

For example, my laptop is listed in there twice once for when it connected directly through the switch and once when it connected through the wireless connection (WAP). Moreover, at the moment the same laptop is powered off sitting in its case not connnected to anything, so, clearly, there is a need for an up-to-date list.

Did you release the DHCP lease before you disconnected / switched the laptop off?

Would the lease have expired by now?

Hi Neil

When entering the Mac address no seperators or spaces are required nor should they be used. I have just retested this in the lab and it works fine when this rule is followed.

So no spaces (or case Sensitivity) or seperators in your Mac address and you should be fine.

The lease was not released before powering off, nor would it have expired.

So, WinGate would still think that the lease was 'out' to the laptop. (Hence, stored in the registry) Point taken though, a user-interface view of the current leases would be good - but even then a lease that has not been released and has not expired would probably still show up in there.

OK... it would really be nice if that info was in the Help file. :-)

Maybe it is by now - I'm still running 6.03/1005; I have downloaded 6.2.2/1137 and its Help zip file... still, since the only problem I'm currently having is DHCP reservations by MAC address, whether I'll upgrade or not remains to be seen.

I tried it with hyphens and with colons, yet DHCP reservations according to MAC definitely wasn't working either way, so I came here and ran a search.

Kinda bummed that my account didn't get moved here from the webboard.deerfield.com forums, but it created again with same credentials all right. ;-)

Thanks!
