problems encountered during evaluation

Postby avbasa » Sep 16 04 1:44 am

Hi there!

We are currently evaluating Wingate6.0.2 as our proxy server, we are planning to acquire 100 enterprise concurent user license along with kaspersky and puresight as plugins. During the first two weeks of our evaluation, we have not encountered any problem at all. But after blocking some websites e.g.(msg.yahoo.com, zone.msn.com,friendsster.com, games, porno, myspace.com, entertainment), we begin to expirience problems on browsing/downloading certain sites like hotmail, windows update, and liveupdate of symantec. I followed some solutions posted on this forum (cache purging, and set not to cache those sites mentioned) but the problem is still there.

I'm calling the attention of the staff of Wingate to please advice us soon regarding the problems encountered. Our evaluation will be over on Oct. 1. your help will be a great help for us to decide whether to use the software or not.

thank you.

How did you block those sites?

I don't see any reason for WinGate to start blocking sites, so suspect it will be configuration related. Policies can sometimes be a bit tricky to setup - as you've seen on the forums probably - because there are so many options for you to work with.

If you are using the plugin to limit access to sites, be aware that it does a partial match. So, if you are blocking "msn", then "login.passport.msn" will also be blocked. It could potentially be something as simple as that.

Hello again!
Thank you for the quick response! I have reviewed the ban site list and made some changes. In addition I also made some configuration on the caching. After we defined not to cache windowsupdate and msn, we are now able to browse and use windowsupdate, and we dont receive socket error upon logon to hotmail and msn. But why is symantec's liveupdate not working on pc using wingate as proxy(downloading hangs), while those who are using direct connection to the internet was able to finish the download?

What might be the source of the liveupdate problem? Is this a caching problem also or perhaps a misconfigured firewall setting? i have set wingate firewall to high level(denies all connection from the outside) and deleted the default open port (http) auto, on port security tab. Or it could be the plugins -kaspersky and puresight.

As of now Liveupdate is the only problem, if this problem is resolved immediately then we are fully satisfied with the product. My next email will be where and how to buy the license in the Philippines.

thank you

One possible reason:
LiveUpdate has given us problems before when used through a plugin. They give a response that indicates the item could not be scanned / was corrupted. You might actually find it in the quarantine at this time (If you are quarantining files)

As this is normally a safe location, you could add that to the list of overriden sites (For which the plugin is ignored) If you go this route, ne sure that you ONLY add liveupdate, so you're not inadvertently trusting people you shouldn't be.

Also, there was a timeout problem introduced in build 1001 which has been fixed in build 1005. If you have not downloaded 1005, I'd recommend you upgrade to that one.

Hi again !
Our evaluation will soon be over (Oct 3) and we have contacted your local reseller here in the Philippines. We are now waiting for their proposals.

unfortunately I just cant figure out what went wrong with wingate regarding email attachments. My users cannot attach their file/s on yahoo mail and hotmail.

I just dont know how to solve this one. even I have purge all the cache files and deleted the history.dbf etc. and lastly I have uninstall wingate 6.02 and upgraded it to 6.03. It works once but the next try it just went page cannot be displauyed again. I haven't change the default settings on firewall after installing the newest version.except that I have enabled the user authentication on WWW and other services.

By the way I have tested doing the same thing with my other direct internet connection and the file attachment works well. And I dont see installing wingate client to my internet user's machine would be the solution.

My overall grade with wingate including your technical support via forum is 8 over 10 but I can give 9.5 if this problem has immediate solution.

cheers!

What happens if you disable caching completely? OR add rules to not cache those pages.

Also, check the DNS and the HTTP log files to see if there is a clearer indication of where the problem is.
