Wingate 6.0.2 1000, MSN Messenger and Zone.com

Postby Alexmillo » Sep 16 04 10:08 am

I'm experiencing strange problems since I installed the 1000 release of wingate:

msn messenger stays connected for about 5 minutes then disconnects. After this, it reconnects immediately, stays up for another while then disconnects again. And so on....

It's impossible to play games in Zone.com (Microsoft's gaming zone), because when I enter a room and start a match (i.e. checkers), after a while it drops connection to the zone server, kicking me out the match.

The same problem shows trying to play XP internet games (i.e. Reversi or Checkers), the ones which are in the start menu of windows xp: when i'm in the middle of a game, it drops connection to the remote server.

The same things happen on all the computers of my network (all running winXP sp1).

At first, I was thinking about a Microsoft problem (because it happens with MS products only. i have yahoo messenger also and it doesn't have any probs), but some friends in my city told me that they are not experiencing these problems. They do not use wingate, so maybe it could be an issue of this release, because with version 995 I didn't have these problems. I've also tried to install 1001 without results.

Any ideas ??
Can I install version 995 onto 1001 without problems (hoping it can solve) ??

Bye

Yes, you should be able to install 995. Just look through the list of issues it fixes (Top topic in the forum) because those issues will begin affecting you. You could try extending (Or turning off) the timeout for the appropriate service as an interim measure OR - if the programs have a form of keepalives, you can turn that on.

Thank you, I'll try reinstalling 995 version.

I'll let you know if it solves my problems. In that case it could be an issue between wingate and MS services.

I've re-installed 995 over 1001 and everything is fine.

What could it be the reason for such behavior with MS apps ??

If you need more infos about my WG configuration and such, just ask

The new build (1005) solves the timeout problem.

At first it seemed all right, but it still doesn't work correctly.

Now it doesn't drops connection anymore with MSN Messenger or playing in msn Zone.com, but if I enter a room in zone.com and, after, I start MSN Messenger it logs me out of zone.com

Also, I've noticed that Client Activity panel does not give the correct informations, or better, from build 1000 it doesn't show all the connections made from the clients (i.e. doesn't show new connected clients). Build 995 seems more "real time" than the latest ones.
Does that depend on an issue or is a wanted feature ??

Anyway, waiting to test new builds, I installed 995 back.

Can you capture the traffic generated when you enter a room in zone.com? Commview or NetPatrol can do the trick - we just need to know who requested the connection termination.

As of the client activity - did you refer to UDP traffic or TCP traffic?

I'll download netpatrol and try to capture the info you need.

As for client activity, i mean everything: in 995 you can see every request from the clients (NAT, TCP, UDP, opened http urls, WGIC activities and so on) while from 1000 often it doesn't show the machines neither. But these information are still showed in history panel (i.e. you don't see a connected client in activity panel, but if you go to history you can see it's working and see all connections requested).

Sometimes, activity panel doesn't show neither gatekeeper login.

Sorry to bother you with this matter, but I'm not able to configure NetPatrol to capture the traffic you need.
Or just I can't find out where to find it, if it already logs it.

Can you help me on this ??

When NetPatrol is running, start the console, connect to the NetPatrol engine and initiaite capturing (Capture traffic). Log view will have an entry "Capturing started..." then do whatever you need to do to replicate the problem. When it shows itself, stop capturing traffic - the log view shows "Capturing stopped...". Now, if you right-click on this log entry line, you will be presented with the set of options ("View traffic, Save traffic as, etc.) If you save the capture in a file and send it to me, I will be able to see what causes the problem (fortunately).

Strange things with computers..... now seems all right, no droppings, no strange behaviors.... but I'm still trying to find it again.

Now that i've installed 1005 back, I'm experiencing GK client activity panel lack of real time update again.
Instead of showing the client requests, it shows only my gatekeeper logging on, while on history panel it shows all the traffic made when trying to replicate the MSN problem.
In build 995, activity panel showed me (as said before) all the connection attempts made from my clients, now nothing.

Right. Are you sure your client is going through your Wingate machine (default gateway)? Also, if you can capture some of the normal traffic where it shows no activity, can you send it to me?

I've captured the traffic done when trying to replicate the other problem, so i've no difficulties to send it to you, if tell me how or where

The client goes through wingate machine (it uses WG NAT) and has it as default (and unique) gateway, otherwise it has no chanches to access internet. And (sorry if I repeat this) GK history panel shows all the activity of the client, while activity panel shows no traces.
