Some help on licensing and usage please

Postby mlc » Sep 04 04 1:34 pm

I have one NT4 server, and 3 users now need to be able to VPN to the server from home, I read the pricing a few times but still unsure as to what I need to purchase.
Could someone please tell me whats needed to do the above ?

Second question :
How much different is using this VPN as to the one built into NT4 ? or even ones found inside a router ?
The router we have now is a Zyxel Prestige 653HWI, according to the box, allows 20 VPN, but from what I read, setting up a hardware VPN is not a job for the faint hearted ?
I really just need the most simple and basic (but secure) way to allow 2-3 users to VPN to the NT4 server, over both dial-up modem and broadband internet.

Would be most grateful for some input on this .

Many thanks
mlc

be careful, i bought a 6 user license thinking on for the host and 5 for the remotes, wrong,,, if yu buy a 6 user license, it means 1 for the host and 5 for the host side lan, so i am buying single user licenses for each of my remotes and apparently eating the price for the 6 user as i only need one on the host
stickin finger in plug, unwise
turn computer on, very brilliant

mlc, the website has the following commentary on licensing:

WinGate VPN licensing works in the following way:

Firstly, you need to figure out how many installations of the software you need, since you need to purchase a separate license for each installation. You will need one installation for every LAN you want to join into the VPN, or for every remote single user that will be joining the VPN. For example, if you want to connect a small network to the VPN, you would need a gateway license for that network. If you want to allow a mobile user to dial up into the VPN, you would need a single user license for that user.

Secondly, for every separate LAN you wish to be able to participate in the VPN, you need to figure out what size gateway license you require. This is based on the size of that LAN. For a LAN with say 25 computers on it, most of whom want to access the VPN, you would need a gateway license for 25 user LAN. If say only 2 of these computers were going to use the VPN, then you could use a gateway license for 3 user LAN

What that means in plain English is this:

A VPN consists of multiple networks (2 or more) connecting together to form one virtual private network. You need one license for each network that will be participating. The size of the license required for each network is determined by the number of machines on that network that you want to give access to the VPN.

So, as an example:

If you have one NT Server with no machines on it's network, you need a single user license for that server.

Now, you have three other users, each with a laptop (Sales team?) that want to join your VPN. You need another single user license for each of them.

Another example:

If you have one NT Server with three machines on it's network you need a 6 user gateway license. (One for the server, 3 for the other machines).

Now, if you have a user outside of your network who wants to connect in from their laptop you will need a single user license for that user.

If you have another user outside of your network that wants to connect in, from home, for example, who has 2 computers at home that will be participating in the VPN, you will need a 3 user license for that network. (One for each participant from that network)

Hope that makes it clear and understandable. You can also contact our sales and support team directly for assistance with licensing questions like that.

just to make things clear...

I had my wingate configuration up and running, but all of the sudden it doesn't work anymore. As for I can tell, nothing has changed in configuration, firewalls, IP addresses etc.

I bought a 6-user license, for 2 pc's in a business network to be accessible from 3 or 4 pc's in various homes.

Is that the wrong way? should I have bought one 2-user license (if such exists) plus 3 or 4 single-user licenses?

Can this be the cause of things not working any more? In my network log, I do get the message "register for everything", so I would understand if that's the problem.

If this is the problem, is it possible to return my 6-user license and buy the licenses I do need?

Did you purchase this through our site or through a dealer? Should have offered you a trade on that 6 user license for at least a few single user ones.

what you would need is a gateway license for 3 user LAN for the host, then a single user license for each remote VPN client connecting in.

http://www.wingate.com/showfaq.php?faqid=15

has more information. We can trade your gateway license for 6 user LAN in if you like.

The easiest way to do it would be to email us your credit card info, or phone us if you don't want to email and we'll refund your transaction. Then you can purchase the correct licenses.

You can email me directly, mattp at qbik dot com.

Matt

Matt, I have sent you the data last week, but it seems that you haven't charged me for anything. Also, I haven't received new license numbers.
Did something go wrong?
Did I use a false e-mail address?
