Hi Jim,
From the sound of it you are already using XP. System Restore is going to be a good friend to you in this process.
There are a few things I'd recommend you do for this:
1. Backup your existing WinGate registry before making the migration.
2. You can use your existing, registered WinGate 5.2.3 license key (Or earlier versions) with 6.0.3 without any problems.
3. Once you've upgraded to 6.0.3 you should check the settings of your adapters and the different binding policies you have specified. Also be-aware that if you are running a "WinGate OR OS UserDatabase" setup you will be migrated to a "OS Userdatabase" setup.
4. Before each new step, create a System Restore point so you can revert back.
5. 6.0.3 requires activation - so you must be able to get onto the Internet to activate your license key with Qbik.
All that said; it's a bit of a catch-22 which one you do first. Some people have reported problems after upgrading to XP SP2, and a lot of that seems to be related to either DEP (If you have an AMD64 / Opteron / Intel's equiv you might need to make some changes) OR to the automatic enabling of XP's firewall.
I'd be tempted to say do WinGate first, get that running smoothly so you know it works and are happy with it and then upgrade XP.
