Authentication failed ...

Postby neujron » Nov 12 04 10:33 pm

Good day to everyone.

I have just 1 minor problem but sometimes it's very annoying because we don't know what's causing this and it affects our network browsing/connection. I've read before that eventually, Wingate will adjust to our network setup but I didn't know that it will do like this.

Everytime a PC tries to connect to another PC, GateKeeper will always log this in the System Messages tab with the message "Authentication failed - user Guest on 192.x.x.x requested http://pcname/", where 192.x.x.x is the IP address of the connecting PC and pcname is the machine name of the PC it's trying to connect. This is true to every PC we have here, whether XP or 9x client machines. Problem is that, sometimes we can't browse/connect to the workgroup of others, or even within the same workgroup or to the PC we are connecting.

How can we solve this problem? What should be done in the GateKeeper? Please help, TIA.

Why is it showing as HTTP ... what are the users doing at the time when this happens?

That's the funny thing, I was wondering also why it's "http".

But here's what we're doing. We're trying to browse on the network the PC name so we can connect to a shared folder on that PC and do whatever we want like copying or pasting some files or connect to a shared printer.

Are you using straight Explorer / Network Neighbourhood?

What ports are you intercepting? (WWW Proxy Service for "Intercepts")

If I remember correctly, you're not using WGIC, correct?

Yap, Explorer or Network Neighborhood and we're not using WGIC.

Service Port 80 for WWW Proxy server.

I don't think it is a WinGate problem. Something on the computers is pushing the traffic through HTTP. (There's nothing on / enabled that will force WinGate to hook that LAN traffic, hence all the questions before)

Is there any particular browser / explorer enhancements / 3rd party products installed on your client machines that might affect it?

Well. This might be useful ...

Check your proxy settings, as per that document. It shows how that behaviour is possible.

AFAIK there's none only Windows security updates and/or patches which we apply if there is.

I'm also trying to investigate further here what they are doing but this is only happening when we map the shared folder or try to browse on the network. Is there's something we can do in the "Authentication"? Is there any service for internal network control, setup or port maybe in the Wingate? Just thinking...

There is the WINS service, but all that does is snoops the traffic so WinGate is aware of machines rebooting, etc. So it sees a copy of it; it does not actually (Cannot) modify it or do anything about it.

So that won't interfere with network traffic.

Hello Pascal/Support,

I just want to make an update to our problem I've checked everything and also followed the KBA on Microsoft site regarding the Internet Options and checking "Bypass local address..." but it didn't work.

But we'll have to observe again because we just moved to a new machine and we're using now the latest version 6.0.3 Build 1005.

I'll be posting a new inquiry which is much problematic than this one. This "Authentication failed..." problem can wait , we have to resolve first the issue we have right now.

Thanks.

Just a couple of questions:
1. Are you using DHCP ?
If yes:
2. Are you using DHCP from Wingate or DHCP from Windows ?

I would like to know, because I have a problem that looks like this.
I'm using DHCP from Windows 2003 Standard Server.
Since Wingate DOESN'T support DHCP from windows I'm am unable to authenticate users correctly.
Why DHCP from Windows isn't supported anymore ? I don't know.
But it worked just fine in earlier versions (4.5, 5.x)....

Read the following forum in which my problem is described:
http://forums.qbik.com/viewtopic.php?t=2912

I hope that there will be support for DHCP from Windows 2003 soon, because I'm getting tired of waiting...
I've been told there's a life outside the internet, but I can't seem to find the download file :(
