Can't acces internet when i start wingate engine

Postby dbabic22 » Nov 25 04 10:12 am

I have installed windows 2000. I have 2 network cards. One for LAN and one for Cable modem. Evertything is working fine until i start wingate engine. Then i can not longer access internet (from server and from client). I tried windows ICS and that is working fine, but i can't make wingate work? Using 5.23 version. Help please!

What does an "ipconfig /all" show? I suspect you might have a private address on your nic to the cable modem?

If so, go to GateKeeper -> Options -> Advanced and make sure that the adapters are marked properly as "internal" and "external".

Have you considered going to 6.0.3? You can use your 5.2.3 license with 6.x.

Running 6.03 Build 1005

I have a very similar setup and have the exact same problem.

The WinGate server box has 2 NICs, 1 for the DSL modem (connecting via PPPoE to the net) and the other for the internal network.

As sooon as I start the engine, you cannot browse/surf anymore, neither on the server nor any clients.

Network Connections shows:

The Dial-Up Connection -> External
The NIC for the modem -> Internal -> IP set to 192.168.0.1
The NIC for the LAN -> Internal -> IP set to 192.168.1.103

Also of note:
Simply stopping the engine will not solve the problem. You will have to reconnect to the ISP to be able to browse again.
This problem only seems to related to surfing. Even with the WinGate engine running, I can connect to the WinGate server remotely via the internet.

Any help is appreciated.

If you go into Extended Networking you will see a checkbox at the bottom "Protect my computer after WinGate is stopped". I suspect that might play a role in what you are seeing.

The NIC for the modem is set to "Internal". Can you force that to "External", please and try again.

Can you also give us the details about your network hardware - what are the makes of your network cards?

I do not have the Extended Networking option as I haven't installed the NAT feature. It worked fine without when I used version 5.x a while back.

The specs for the NICs:

LAN: 3COM EatherLink XL 10/100 Mbit PCI
Modem: D-Link DL10050

Switching the setting for the modem NIC to external didn't help. Same symptons.

Thank you for your swift responses.

Have you tried v6? The driver was changed in v6 in order to handle various hardware better.

Sorry, my message was for the original poster.

As of this Internet problem - even though the ENS support is disabled, the driver is most probably being loaded. Try renaming the driver (\winnt\system32\drivers\qbikhkxp.sys) and reboot the machine.

Hm. How is the server's browser configured? If it's not set to proxy through WinGate and you do not have ENS installed (Did you install it and then disable it through the UI or not install it at all) then it should be going out normally. (However your system normally routes traffic to the Internet)

There is no such driver on the system.

There is no proxy set up on the server.

Is "Auto detect proxy settings" checked on your browser? I'm trying to work out how it is humanly possible for WinGate to see the traffic if you're NOT using ENS and if it's not installed, and if you're not using a proxy.

This option was checked. Unchecking it made no difference though.

Meanwhile, I have setup a new server (different NICs) with a fresh install of WinXP.

Same thing happens again. This can't be hardware related.

Hi there

You may wish to take a read of our knowledgebase article on setting up WinGate behind a DSL router/modem as this may be similar to your scenario

You can find it here:

While you are trying the suggestions from Erwin's post - can you send us a copy of your WinGate registry, please? You can export this from "Options" -> "Advanced" in GateKeeper.

Also, the results of an "ipconfig /all", and a "route print" from the command line before and after the dial-up connection is established would be useful You can email results of those to me directly at pascalv at qbik dot com.
