DHCP problems and more

Postby nishant » Dec 16 04 5:47 am

Well I've never had this problem when using wingate 5.x.x but since then i upgraded to windows xp sp2 and tried out wingate 6.0.3.

The problem is that I'm not sure how to setup my two computers to share the internet. Ive got the two connected by a crossover cable. I'm using a AOL broadband. The modem is a ADSL usb modem.
The wingate guide was always hard to use but I finally figured out that the sharing I need is a NAT. So I allowed the IP to be assigned by the DHCP on the client pc but on the server one it doesnt assign it. I manually tried to assign the server pc as 192.168.0.1 and filled the subnet fields. Then the client pc was assigned an ip automatically by dhcp. This configuration used to work fine before the upgrade. All I get now is that my programs on the client pc cannot connect. What am I doing wrong? Can some one explain step by step how I'm supposed to set up my network given just the limited networking equipment.
Thank you in advance!!

When looking at the client activity tab it can be seen that the client is trying to access the internet as it normally used to in 5.2.3 but the website doesn't appear, it just hangs. The bindings for dhcp and winsock seem ok as i configured the wingate server pc as 192.168.0.1. plus the winsock has a loop something at 127.0.0.0

I'm really stumped as I loved this program in the past but my patience is thinning

Have you checked the XP SP2 firewall? It's enabled by default - maybe that is blocking the traffic?

Secondly, double check the bindings for all your services - make sure that they are bound correctly. Binding policies is a major change from version 5.x and as per the instructions we recommend that you review those after an upgrade.

Last thing is - that's a very very interesting route table. How many / what kind of network interfaces / dialup connections do you have?

the firewall is disabled and so is MS ICS, i used a registry patch to be doubly sure.
The bndings are as i had stated but I'm a bit of a newbie so can't really tell if all's well or not.
The network is quite simple. The wingate pc is desktop with an NIC card. Its connected to the client pc via a crossover cable. The internet is provided by AOL via an external usb modem connected to the desktop. Unfortunately it doesnt conventionally connect to the internet from the windows dial up thingy, u've gotta use the aol program but then all other internet applications work fine.
I can however use free programs like AnalogueX to setup a simple proxy server, and then the clients can connect using a proxy address. But I dont want to use this as its difficult when using chats programs and P2P software. I would much prefer to use a NAT.

Thank you for the prompt reply!

The thing that concerns me is that route table of yours. Can you run "route print" from a command line and a "ipconfig /all", please? Copy the results using the 'mark' function (So it's in text) and email it to me.
