Wingate and XP's Remote Desktop

Postby gravas » Feb 08 04 10:23 am

Hello ...
Could someone explain to me what kind of settings Wingate need to allow me to connect to a remote desktop computer via its proxy engine ?
Thanks in advance.

Hi Gravas

I take it you mean you are attempting to use XP's Remote Desktop?

If this is the case then you will need to open a hole in WinGate's firewall for TCP port 3389 (the port used by Remote Desktop). This can be done under the Port Security tab of the ENS properties.

Select the "Connections from the Internet option" TCP port 3389,
and set the "Action" to redirect the packets to the IP address of the client machine you are using Remote Desktop on behind WinGate.

This way when the external machine on the internet responds to your remote desktop commands, the incoming data will be sent straight to your Remote Desktop client machine behind WinGate.

Hope this helps

What about more than one machine?

I would like to access the desktop of two machines. Can this be done?

Also, for me, the above requires guest access to be open to work. Is this the correct way?

Hi there

Unfortunately because RDP(Remote Desktop Protocol) uses TCP 3389 with my suggested configuration above you will be only able to have this port redirected to one machine when it comes in from the Internet.

You may want to check to see MS documentation to see if another port can be used for RDP (but I dont think this can be done).

Or alternatively if your able to you may want to consider using Microsft VPN to connect to the LAN and then access the Remote Desktop as you would on a normal LAN via the VPN .
Obviously there is quite a bit more configuring to do but this way but the incoming VPN traffic (through the WinGate firewall) would be using a differnet port and so not conflict with the RDP setup.
