AUST Telstra ADSL connection problem.

Postby jessiefuntron » Apr 09 05 3:49 pm

I have setup a Wingate VPN Host behind a Wireless Router Netgear WGT624 192.168.0.1 which also sits behind a Cisco 837 Modem 192.168.2.1 and enabled port forwarding UDP+TCP 809 on both routers. The ADSL is 512/128k at the host. I have managed to connect from two different connections the 1st being Optus Cable and the 2nd being Internode DSL Symetrical 512/512. My question is when I try to connect with a Telstra Home ADSL connection 400MB 512/128 dynamic I can see the routes and computers but when I click test connection it will not explore the VPN host ( Not accesable message). I have tried 3 different modems and two diff computers to join and still same thing. Does anyone know if Telstra blocks the default udp ports on their Home ADSL accounts. Why cant I browse from this connection. It is a major service providor and I have many Wingate VPN's to setup. I am most certain I will run into this problem again. I want to find a solution for my clients as I have recommended Wingate after trying it myself. Any Australian users with suggestions would be great. Do you need an Symetrical DSL connection to use Wingate VPN or will an Asymetrical dsl connection do??

Can you ping across the link at all? (Rather than browse). There are a few troubleshooting steps described in the setup guide.

yes can ping VPN server's IP with replies and have tested ping mtu's to be about 1470 before segments.

Did you then make the mtu adjustments to match the 1470?

I didnt make the adjustment for the 1470 mtu's as it was the same mtu reply as my work adsl Sym connections that worked perfectly. I used the same laptop to try and connect in all three locations. I just feel its a udp port block but cannot get answer from the isp Telsta to confirm the theory. Is there a way of testing trafic through UDP or TCP ports?? If not I may have to try and change the comm port to something higher and test it then. I am trying avoid this as would prefer the default settings for future do it yourself installs.

If you were able to ping the internal ip of the machine the tunnel is established. Then you know that udp is not being blocked.

Normally, when that is the case and you are unable to use the network successfully the interface mtu must be adjusted to account for the vpn packet wrapping.
