Evaluate WinGate VPN

Postby batsignal » Apr 15 05 5:06 pm

Dear Sir,

As asked by Boss, he would like to know that is it possible to use Wingate VPN server to control the access for the payroll server within the office network. The deatils of my scanario is as follows.

We have 5 offices located in HK and China (one in HK and the rest are in the China area), they are all inter-connected by using different IP ranges via leased lines.

My payroll server is located in HK and all HK HR staff are required to access it via local LAN but the other types of staff (including all non-HK and China HR staff) should not able to access it without using VPN client software.

As for the China users, they are now accessing the payroll server via
Terminal server (same subnet as the payroll server) located in HK office.

I would like to know, can we use the Wingate VPN to do the security control within the office network? If yes, what should I do for the setup of VPN server as I'm not quite familar with the setup. BTW, is there any HK support staff I can contact for the above issue? Please advise. Thanks!

Yes, you can use Wingate VPN ofr internetwork connectivity - it provides quite good routing support as well as good authentication/authorization mechanism.

Having said that I would recommend you installing Wingate joiner in one of the remote locations and checking whether the connection/transfer sped is adequate for your application because VPN (any VPN as a matter of fact) adds quite significant overhead to the network traffic due to the encryption/decryption process.

Dear Sir,

I have installed the Wingate VPN server on my testing computer with two NICs but I can't find the VPN client software from your website.
I have downloaded the Qbik RIP v2 client 113kB ZIP and install it
on client machine. but it is just starting a system service on my notebook. Please advise where I can find it and how to import the configuration from VPN server into my VPN client machine. Please advise. Thanks!

There is no dedicated client for Wingate - what you do you install Wingate on both sides (or VPN-only Wingate if you prefere to have VPN-only solution).

Dear Sir,

I have installed both VPN server and client (using evaluation copy of Wingate VPN software) onto two different machines but
I cannot find the option named Local Network in the Local Partcipation field in VPNs to host screen (in VPN host machine). Therefore, I cannot let my VPN client to access the testing data files (another testing file server) behind the VNP server. Please advise.

Local Network is used for -
This PC and all other selected PCs on the LAN behind the VPN server will participate in the VPN.

Can you try re-activating the license? (Even if it is a trial) That feature is controlled by licensing.
