The Wingate Engine could not be started...

Postby Mark_411 » Jul 15 05 7:24 am

Hello, I've just installed Wingate 6.0.4.1025 and rebooted but everytime I try to start it, it says "The Wingate Engine could not be started". I'm using Windows XP Pro service pack 2. I don't have any extra programs running in the background, I have no firewall or even anti-virus software installed, and I'm not using any routers. Please help! Thanks,

Hi Mark,

Were you running any earlier versions of WinGate?

If you watch the WinGate icon in the systray do you see it change from red to yellow? Then what happens, does it go back to red?

No, this was the first time installing / running WinGate. I've rebooted again and watched the icon in my systray as I tried to Go Online with GateKeeper (entering a user / pass and clicking OK) and it telling me The WinGate Engine is not running. Do you wish to start it? I click OK and it gives the usual "The WinGate Engine could not be started." message all the while the icon remains red and never once is yellow. I thought perharps a service wasn't running or enabled so I enabled every service there was and started them ( except for ones that were 3rd party programs / didn't come with the OS ) then rebooted and tried again... same problem. I did however notice when trying to start the Qbik WinGate Engine service from the Administrative Tools/Services tool in the Control Panel that it gave this error message:
"Could not start the Qbik WinGate Engine service on Local Computer.

Error 193: 0xc1

I hope that helps, I've run out of ideas now short of formating but I'm not even sure that would help at this point. I'm willing to do anything to get this working so don't hold back if the solution is a really long or complicated process please.

Thanks.

Hi Mark,

Can we get you to install a debug trace build? It will hopefully show us where the start up fails.

Did you disable the XP personal firewall?

Does the Windows Event Viewer indicate why it is not starting up?

(Windows) Start menu --> Run --> eventvwr

When I google your error, there is is a relevant article on the Microsoft Knowledgebase regarding this.

MattP:

That would be fine, I'll let you or anyone else willing to use my VNC and do whatever you need to from there. Yes, I have the Windows XP Personal Firewall disabled.

jamesc:

I looked in the Event Reviewer and for System everytime I try to start up the Wingate Engine it'll say Error under Type for Service Control Manger and when I right click and select Properties it says under Description:

The Qbik WinGate Engine service failed to start due to the following error:
Qbik WinGate Engine is not a valid Win32 application.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

I tried going to the site, apparently they never had any information on it or it was either taken down or removed.

Thanks guys for going out of your way to help me like this, I hope we can get this figured out. :)

Hi Mark

sounds like it might be a corrupted installation. Have you tried re-downloading, and re-installing?

jamesc:

Hi, no I was referring to the http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp link.

adrien:

Hi, I uninstalled it, rebooted. Comfirmed that the folder was deleted, redownloaded it from the website and installed it again and once again, rebooted. I'm still getting the same problem though. I double checked to make sure no extra background processes were running during this whole process to ensure nothing would cause any corrupt installion. I also enabled all the windows services before doing this whole process in case it needed them. The only thing I can think of now is perharps some windows dll it is dependant on is corrupt? I don't know, I haven't had any other problems with other software like this. Where can I get that debug trace build of Wingate? Or maybe you'd like to use a VNC too? Again, thanks.

Hi Mark,

I've just sent you an email with a link to the trace build. Please send us the log file when it's done.

Mark, one side thought here. The trace build will give us useful information but have you tried starting the WinGate engine not as a service but as a normal Win32 executable?

Create a shortcut to WinGate.exe where you have it currently installed. In the properties of the shortcut alter the command line so it reads

"<wingate install folder>\WinGate.exe" -force9x

That forces the system to not run as a service but as an application in the context of the user you are currently logged in as. If you do that, does it start fully then?

Woohoo! That worked like a charm, thanks!

MattP:
Do you still want me to run that trace build and send you a log or?

Get us the TRACE, please. It might help figure out why it refuses to run as a service - if you'd be willing to help with that?

At least we know that it's not winGate itself, but something about the setup that is causing the difficulties and you can at least use the system in the meantime.
