Hi Wilko,

In IE go Tools -->Internet Options -->Connections -->LAN Settings -->Select the Check Proxy server box and enter Internal IP address of WG server e.g. 192.168.0.1 and your WG server browser will now use WG WWW proxy. If the WWW service requires authentication then you (on the server) will be asked to authenticate. I hope this is what you were looking for.

E-mail client on PC with WinGate server installed

Postby kiav » Aug 12 05 1:35 am

I'm using wingate in the same manner - one of two PCs on my network is WinGate server and client at the same time. How can I get my e-mail client (e.g. Thunderbird) using WinGate server on the same PC?

If you want to connect to the mail services in WinGate then just do the same thing, set the WinGate server IP address (or the localhost address) as the address of the server to connect to.

Will I use the WinGate POP/SMTP proxy doing so?

Depends how you want to set it up. What is your desired result? If you want to set up the email server instead of proxies, there is a whitepaper with 5 or so different scenarios that you can follow.

Please let us know if you require more assistance.

Thanks, I'v already read it. I use dialup internet connection. So, in this white paper is no any scenario that could help.
My goal - is good proxy server with anti virus scanning capability. I don't want use WinGate's capability of POP Collections, POP server, SMTP server, locally hosted mailboxes etc.
I downloaded KAV antivirus for WinGate. Unfortunatly I don't know if it scans my e-mail or not.

1. Check that the POP3 Proxy Service is installed. If it is not, right click and add a new POP3 Proxy service.

2. Setup your email client. Here is an example of Outlook Express.

On the Servers tab, please note.
1. Setting Outlook Express to collect mail via POP3 Proxy on same computer.
2. There is no scanning for OutGoing Email. So I have the normal mail server address in there
3. To use the POP3 Proxy, we must use a syntax that states the username, and the mail server address.
In my example:
test@freelanceman.com#mail.freelanceman.com
(username for email)#(mail server location on internet)
Sometimes email servers are set to not require the domain name for the login
test#mail.freelanceman.com
(username for email)#(mail server location on internet)
4. The POP3 Proxy service runs on port 8110
5. Since when I am sending mail (SMTP), I need to specify my normal email login info. Since we are not using a proxy, there is no delimiter (#)

Now that I have gone over the correct settings. Lets put a test file through there to see if the KAV plugin picks up a virus. Download test file below directly to your desktop. Then attach to an email, and send it to your self. Once sent, check your email. When the KAV Plugin finds the virus, it will send you an email with "Intercepted Message" as the subject. You should then be able to go to GateKeeper and view the quarantined file
GateKeeper --> View menu --> Quarantine. Look for the Quarantine tab at the bottom of GateKeeper
