Having problems collecting mail from pop account

Postby Ants » Sep 14 05 5:42 pm

Hi

I'm having a problem at a client, they use wingate as their proxy and firewall to gain access to the internet, i've also setup the mailserver in winagte to collect mail from their pop mail account at their ISP.

Winagte connects to the pop account at the ISP and downloads the mail, and the user download the mail again from winagte to the the mail client (eg. outlook), but sometimes the wingate server connect the the pop account and say that there is no mail in the pop account at the ISP, but when you connect to the pop account over the webpage of the ISP there is mail in the inbox but wingate doesn't download it, and says there is no mail to download.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Regards,
Ants

It sounds like the WinGate mail server believes it has already collected that email, and hence will not download it again. When it downloads the mail, it will place the UIDL number of the email into the registry. If it comes across this UIDL again, it will not download it.

The UIDL numbers can be found in WinGate’s registry. You can delete the appropriate ones to re-collect the messages.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Qbik Software\WinGate\Settings\Mail\POP3Collection\*AccountName\UIDL

Ants, can you ask your client if the email in the Web mail interface has already been downloaded and delivered / viewed?

Hi again

Hi there

No, the mail is not downloaded, they never recieve the mail it just lies there in the pop account by the ISP. The wingate server is also set to download mail from the pop account every 1 minute, so they don't realy have time to look at mail through the web interface by the ISP. They also dont log on to the web interface by ISP, the mail in the pop account are also unopend/unread.

Any ideas?

Hi Ants,

1. a) Do the emails in the web interface correspond to users who have mail boxes on the server?

1. b) If there are not corresponding accounts on the WinGate server, then you can set it to deliver to a default address

2. What version of WinGate is your client using? I have been informed that we actually found and fixed a bug two weeks ago regarding the UIDLs

I'm using version 6.0.4 , this the latest isn't it? The username for the account on the wingate server is the same as the account name on the ISP mail account
eg. account on wingate: john@companyname.com
account on ISP : john@companyname.com

But some mail gets left on the server by the ISP.

Hi Ants,

I have asked a colleague to review this issue to see if there is anything I have missed. We will advise.

Can you ask your mail host whether they use a EMWAC POP3
server?

Their pop3 server is branded as a normal pop3 server? Gee they are a helpful bunch :) If you have received any email from that site, it may say the kind of server in the message source.

I will need to discuss the next setep with one of the developers who are not here at present. Sorry that this is taking a bit of time.

Hi Ants

Did you check that registry key that James posted?

Any number in there matching a UIDL on the server will mean WinGate won't download the mail.

You can see exactly what is going on if you enable debug logging in the SMTP server (POP3 collection uses those log settings), then check in the POP3 Collection.log file.
