ENS won't install

Postby DaveStones » Sep 16 05 6:37 pm

Hi.
I’m running xp home SP2, I've installed Wingate and selected the check box to install ENS, no errors accrued. I registered Wingate in trial mode.
When I go to configure Wingate there is an error in the Extended Network Driver that says Status=Not Installed. I checked for the qbikhkxp.sys driver and it is in C:\windows\system32/drivers. Under the System Messages there is an error stating "The ENS driver was not loaded. This may mean that it is missing or has been disabled". Well it’s not missing and the checkbox "Load ENS On Startup" is set to on. If its disabled how do I enable it, or could it NOT be loading at startup due to run permissions of xp...or something.

ps I've download the exe twice and installed the software twice with no change to the above problem.

Thank you..

Is there any indication of the problem in the Windows Event Viewer?

(Windows) Start Menu --> Run --> eventvwr

Can you please export this branch from the registry and post it in the forum:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\QbikHkXP

OK Dave; thanks for the feedback. I will have to consult with Genie further tomorrow. In the registry export you placed in the forum, we were expecting the "ENUM" key, but it was not there. The ENUM key is created after a reboot, hence the question.

Hi

Looks like the driver was not properly installed.

Were you logged in as an Admin when you ran the installer? (Does XP home even support such a thing?)

Ok the EMUN key is most likely the problem as it is not in ether the registry key [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\QbikHkXP] or the sub key [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\QbikHkXP\Parameters]. The account I log into has Admin privileges (It is the only account), the any time I have the option to log into the Admin account is in safe mode. While digging around in the registry I noticed that all the keys "created by Wingate" have permissions set as SPECIAL PERMISSIONS and unless I change these permissions I can't modify or delete any key or sub key, could this be why the EMUN key might be missing, when I log in it doesn’t have the required permissions to modify that key?

So do you normally log in when you start up the computer, or does it go straight into the user's desktop?

First off, Thanks guys for all your help it’s greatly appreciated.
I usually Log in with a password. I believe in the past the user name and password has been changed and maybe this is causing a problem. Last night I grabbed an old 6 Gig hard drive out of the retirement cupboard and installed a fresh copy of XP Home SP1 with no MS updates and with only mother board drivers. I didn't set up any login username or password. I installed Wingate to the fresh drive and it all works fine. I checked the reg keys and sure enough the permissions are totally different, for one they where set on as full for current user, and two there was a lot less permission accounts. It would appear that I may have to set my login on my original drive back to what it was when I first installed the OS to get Wingate to work correctly and that my cause problems with other software running on my PC, hence I think I'll continue trialing Wingate on the other hard drive for now. Thanks heaps for all your help.
ps. If you wish to post back with a possible solution I will try it, as it may help any others with the same problem in the future.
