Problem after upgrading to 6.0.4

Postby mchis » Sep 22 05 2:42 am

Hi, I'm a registered WG user and today I upgraded from 6.0.3 t 6.0.4, and in the same session installed the KAV plugin (to test it). Shortly I realized I am not able to send e-mails, outlook complains with "Outlook could not connect to the outgoing mail server (SMTP)..." very quickly (I can however see a "SOCKS5 Connect x.x.x.x" in the GateKeeper history pane (were x.x.x.x is the ip of my mail server). Note the mail server is on the internet.

Now, I went ahead and tried to open a telnet session against the smtp sever. Strange: on the WG server the telnet session opens, while on the WG client it quickly says "Connecting To smtp.runbox.com...Could not open connection to the host, on port 25: Connect failed". I gues this is another sign something's wrong.

Any ideas?

Guys, yous should find a better way for customers to update their installs... because for now it seems you modify settings at a minor version update, thing that should never happen, or the customer should be *at least* prompted about it. I was struggling for 3 hours with the aforementioned issue, just to find out that 6.0.4 also configured an interception for the smtp server (port 25) which was not set up in the 6.03 install it was updating.

That would have been done during the KAV installation. There would have been a prompt during the installation asking if you wanted to enable Transparent Redirection (Renamed to Intercepts for 6.x) with the option to manually configure it.

Hmmm we should probably only do that for HTTP, or allow the user to specify separately.

Doing it for SMTP is probably not that useful, and requires the SMTP server to be correctly configured for delivery.

Correct, it does allow the user to specify separately.

When going through the installer it gets to a screen that indicates which services it will be configured for. You can click the "Manual Setup" button to alter the list of services.

to clarify, we offer the user the opportunity to separately enable TR on either the SMTP Server or WWW proxy? Or were you meaning binding the plugin to that service?

Thanks guys. Pascal - you are right, the KAV installation actually did it. Now that I disabled the redirection, should I understand KAV will not be ablt to work correctly for SMTP?
