cannot open PDF files

Postby DickyArts » Nov 10 05 12:22 am

I am sorry to ask a previous discussed question again but the hints you gave that guy do not work for me ( http://forums.qbik.com/viewtopic.php?t=656 )

We have installed Wingate 6.1.0 (Build 1068; incl. Kaspersky plugin) on Win2000 Server SP4 (but with some recent updates missing).

Trying to download some PDFs result in scrambled files: The Acrobat Reader 7.03 does not want to open them since the file format is unknown (opened with notepad it seems there is some kind of binary header or encryption in front of the PostScript-data)
Neither opening the file from inside the browser nor downloading it to disk does work. Only switching the IE6 to a different proxy solves the problem but that proxy is not available to my co-workers so it is no real solution.

Examples of such PDFs can be found at http://www.dpma.de/formulare/patent.html

Most interesting: It does not happen to all PDFs. Some (small?) can be opened without any problem. And may be reloading the same file several times is successful (or may be I just opened another file with the second click - I am not sure)

Thanks in advance for any suggestion on how to open PFDs.

Hi Thomas

If via proxy, try adding a rule in Wingate's caching with a criterion 'Not HTTP Url that contains' with the string being part of the server name.

This assumes you use Wingate's cache that is!

Maybe add an 'Overide' in KAV to ignore all material from a certain server.

I downloaded the .PDF's suggested and were 100% via proxy to Adobe Reader V5x.

Report back how it goes.

Thank you for your interest. As suggested I turned off caching completely (rules would be the next step) but the same problem. The OLE-component of the Adobe Reader says (translated from german) "File does not start with "%PDF-"." when I click on the document 12.07.2005 P 2790.1 / 1.05 from the site mentioned above. I just switched to the other (non-wingate)proxy and it loads perfect. To be on the safe side I tried to stop/start the "WWW Proxy Server" inside Wingate and then I restarted the Qbik-server in the windows services list - both without success :-( Do I need to restart the entire server?

Additional information: Since the proxy already ran about one week without kaspersky and without trouble it seems there may be a relation... I will check that on friday.
