bandwidth control - allow any user to use no more than 50%

Postby dataking » Nov 21 05 1:00 am

Greetings,

was just wondering how we would go about implementing a bandwidth control policy where we would alocate say a maximum of a certain percentage(say in this case 50%) of available badndiwdh to any user and not allow them to exeed that. im not sure if i am geting my point across efficiently or even describing the problem right, so here is what the scenerio looks like.

running wingate trial(enterprise)

10 users.
256kbps internet adsl link.

when any one particulat user starts downloading, even unintentionally, say updating their favorate Instant Messenger client, it kills the rest of the users and brings connection downt o a crawl, same goes if one of them starts attaching a file to their email! to prevent this from happening, i was hoping there would be some way to say, force a user to use no more than 50% of available connection bandwidth(upload and download), this way the user would be able to go about doing their bit, and the rest of the gang wont be cursing the admin for a chocked connection!!!

i hope theres a solution for this out there!

thanks and best regards,

Shayan

You need to create a restriction with 50% of available bandwidth as a criterion. Then create a rule with source information set to 192.168.0.0/255.255.0.0 or whatever your internal IPs are. Tick "Bi-directional" checkbox - and that's pretty much it.

thank you very much for the info, i did put those setting in, and they worked, but only on burst transfers! the transfers eventually go up to full capacity of the link within 2 minutres of the download starting......what am i doing wrong?...

Aye - that's because the rules allows up to 50% of available bandwidth to be allocated for the users. Anyway, try setting hard limit in this restriction - say, 100kbps

hard restrictions is what i ended up puting, because i figured it was detecting the link capacity as 100mbps as that of the ethernet interface connecting the ADSL router to the server! so i put in 80kbps, heres what happens when i do put the a restriction set to 80kbps ;

client starts downloading, the transfer starts at a controlled 8.6KBps, then gradually creeps up back to full capacity which is 256kbps....this takes around 2 minutes, choking he connection, the vest thing i was hoping to avoid by using bandwidth control and limiting any one user to no more than a certain chunk of the bandwidth!

is there any other option somewhere else? like the priority levels? or anything else at all?
