Bandwidth control and priority

Postby LifeMaster » Nov 28 05 9:51 am

Hello,

Perfect software and I am ready to buy it, but I have searched this forum and read all docs but still can't do one thing. Let me explain.

We have an office LAN of 15 computers:
10.1.1.1 - 10.1.1.15
subnet mask 255.255.255.0

Computer 10.1.1.3 has internet connection 100Mbit but real internet speed is 128kbit.

I have installed WinGate 6.1 there and share that internet connection to ten computers using WWW Proxy. I have created 10 users and added 10 IPs to the Assumed Users section. Each IP associated with specified users accordingly.

Everything works great. BUT I need to share that 128kbit internet channel to these computers with no restrictions UNTIL 10.1.1.14 accesses the internet. When it access internet I need that 96kbit of internet channel get available to that computer and just 32kbit chanel left to all other 9 computers.

In other words, I want 10.1.1.14 to have almost absolute priority over all other computers. I want that internet speed were 96kbit on it no matter if there alot of download processes run on other computers. It should slow down all other computers and give required bandwidth to 10.1.1.14.

IS this possible? I am playing with Bandwidth control rules for over 3 days now but can't do what I need.

You can set a restriction for 10.1.1.14 to 96kbit with high priority and have a restriction set for other users to use, say, 90% of available bandwidth with lower priority.

Tried. Doesn't work.

As I said, internet conncted from DSL splitter to PC at 100Mbit but real speed is 128kbit.
It will take 90% from what? from 128kbit of 100Mbit?

Can you please be more specific? Also, what should I set at the Bandwidth control -> Scheduling screen?

Yes, there is a problem at the moment that you can't choose the actual limiting factor. As a matter of fact - what happens if you allow all your clients 128kbit but prioritize them differently?

Nothing happen. Even if I add a highest priority rule for 10.1.1.14, lowest priority rule for all others and if all other pcs downloading something - it is VERY hard to go on the internet from 10.1.1.14.

But I need to make 10.1.1.14 very prioritized. For user that works with that pc it should look like internet channel always available and never heavy loaded, never busy.

Also, what should I set at the ENS -> Bandwidth control -> Scheduling screen? Can you please explain everything located at this tab?

English is my fourth language but I hope you understand me.
Thanks

I do, no problem with that.

Well, scheduling..... Can you try changing best-match criteria? Set it to, say, "Giving minimum bandwidth"?

I have spent one more day playing with Bandwidth control section but still can't get what I need. Also, I've read all manuals but there almost no information about this.

I tried to find out what does mean the "Priority Levels" values at the Scheduling tab of Bandwidth control menu. What is these values for? What do they do?

Before installing WinGate I have been using stand alone application called Bandwidth Controller and it took me just a few minutes to arange what I need for 10.1.1.14 pc.

Why it is so complicated with WinGate? You have developed really good software and I like it very much. I am going to order it.

But I still need to make that 10.1.1.14 very prioritized. For user that works with that pc it should look like internet channel always available and never heavy loaded, never busy. Is there any other ways to do this? I just tired of experimenting. HELP ME
