Proxy settings in IE

Postby bench » Dec 01 05 6:30 am

I will be removing the wingate client from all PC's, which turned out to be a enduring task by itself. It took over 20 minutes to uninstall wingate client from each PC.

What I want is to be able to monitor where each user goes on the internet. I will be configuring internet options>connections>LAN settings to use the proxy to connect to the internet and assign port 80. I just want to be able to monitor where each user goes and not interfere with any other service they use on the LAN.

How can I get them to authenticate using the method above? I have selected assumed users in the WWW proxy policy and winsock redirector instead of the user must be authenticated.

Wingate client was causing just too many problems for local services.

Do you have NAT installed? If you do, turn on Intercepts for the web proxy as well to ensure that traffic is being redirected through the server in-case the users take the proxy settings off IE.

Then, to have them authenticate will depend on the user database you use. But generally you would require authentication in the policies; which means WinGate will look at the current security level (Assumed) and will then challenge the user with the chosen authentication scheme to elevate their security level to Authenticated.

The front page of the web proxy shows you which authentication methods are available.

Hi all,

In a case like this, the thirty seconds it takes to apply a local Group Policy to the machine is well worth the effort. Or better still via AD if available.

Run the Group Policy snap in --> User Configuration --> Administrative Templates --> Windows Components --> Internet Explorer --> Disable Changing Connection settings and for good measure the Connection Wizard.

Problem over...

OK, it works, I can see the name of the user and IP of the machine whenever they surf the net. As long as I can see the name of the user it's fine, it also shows them as authenticated but assumed for user with a laptop since they are in a workgroup.

The group policy suggestion souds good, I will try it because some of the users saw me configuring IE and Firefox.

Thanks.
