Socks Proxy BUG?

Postby sandrain » Nov 27 03 3:06 pm

Wingate 5 is Great! I have tried about 3 proxy servers ,wingate is the most powerful one.

But I was confused on socks proxy, the socks proxy can not use authentication! this is my configration step:

1. Testing system
server: windows 2000 server two ip: 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2
client: windows 2000 professional ip:192.168.0.3
2. create user
name:test
password:test
3. config socks proxy
port:1080 access rights grant to user test, must authentication, default rights(system) ignored
4. clinet PC user IE or ICQ , and configed use socks server 192.168.0.1
port,user,password
5. result
when client PC use network, at Wingate server ,there is "guest authentication failed " message appeared. and client never can use network
only when you configed sock proxy access rights by everyone and user maybe unkown, clinet can use network

Is it a wingate bug?

Hello,

No, it's not a bug. I think you have just missed one last step and that is to setup WinGate to accept authentication. See these knowledgebase articles
http://support.qbik.com/index.php?_a=kn ... v2=WinGate
http://support.qbik.com/index.php?_a=kn ... ails&_i=26
http://support.qbik.com/index.php?_a=kn ... ails&_i=35
The socks proxy as you found out will not ask the client to be authenticated. The client must be authenticated before using proxy. Those articles should get you going in the right direction. If not, post another query.

But i think there is one thing I am not explain clearly:

that was, my client was ICQ, the only thing on clinet will do is config ICQ's socks server's IP/Username/Passwd , at this situation, how can I make authentication with wintae?

THanks again!

we have had ongoing issues with ICQ. I am not sure about the latest version, but unless they fixed it, it can't handle being told by the SOCKS server that authentication is not required (which will happen if you are already authenticated or assumed) if it is configured to use authentication.

You could try using the WinGate Internet Client...
