bandwidth controller and Skype

Postby delgiudice » Feb 24 06 12:03 pm

Hi, can I use wg in my network, to improve skype?

I have 10 pc's (all win2k professional), ADSL 1mb DOWN / 128kb UP. When 2 or more users use Internet (navigation, download, e-mail,etc..) , skype crashes. WG can guarantee minimum of bandwidth to each pc? How to do?

I'm sorry, I don't have a good english.

Yes, you can use WG Bandwidth throttling to control Skype traffic - what you need to do is to create two rules: one, which commits the certain bandwidth to Skype traffic (port 540 IRC), say, 80Kb and the second rule, which gives lower priority bandwidth of, say, 95% to other clients.

Thank you genie for your help!
Just more one thing, creating this rules, can 3 or 4 users run skype together without crashes? Or just 1 user can use skype each time?

I don't think that the numnber of users can be a limited factor - we have at least 4 Skypes running behind Wingate with no problems at all.

Ok! Thank you again!
I think next week I will try it. Are this 2 rules easy to create? where can I find some examples ?

It is fairly well described in the manual - Bandwidth throttling configuration.
