External mail, intermittent problems

Postby ekkas2 » Mar 09 06 10:23 am

We've got a nagging problem with users on our network using POP3 to get mail from external servers. The problem also seem to come and go. Users complain that sometimes for the whole day the mail just times out, but then suddenly works again and a few minutes later it may or may not work. If we set up that same mailbox on the WG server, it works every time...?

Also seem to be more o.k. if just small text messages is received, but with larger attachments we get much more problems.

Where does POP-proxy come into play? Can enable/disable of POP3 server have any effect?

Any suggestions/links to read?

Thanks

I'll point you at the standard mail setup document for version 6. However, how do you currently have WinGate Mail setup?

No, we don't use WG for mail, just smtp. We have a Linux mail server running our own mail (no problem). The problem is just when clients that have other ISP mailboxes try to get it through our beloved WG...

Daft me, I forgot the document.

I think a combination of scenario 2 and 3 would be what you're after?
