What a strange error?

Postby Surfer » Apr 07 06 1:00 am

Hello!

Our local net users working thru WG 6.1.1. Sometimes they suffer from strange thing: after some time of browsing in WWW browser stop showing any pages and show a HTTP error 500 "internal server error". After 1-2 min of pressing into refresh button all turns to normal. After 9-10 min of browsing (may be less or more) situation repeats. What it can be?

Hi Surfer,

Connection method and Authentication method?
DHCP or Static?
How many users on network vs. license count? You can turn on logging for licensing issues.
Do any debug logs for the relevant services give any extra information?

WinGate 6.1.1. on Windows XXXX?

Direct connection thru proxy without NAT, use assuming.
Static internal ip's.
License for 50, now 35 are used.
Nothing additional in the logs. During refreshing nothing appear on the activity tab. Just empty.
Windows 2000 server SP4.
Tip - effect disappear after server restart for approx. 1 hour. 8-|

P.S.May be DNS server not responding in this moment?

Hi

I would be suspicious of a DNS issue. Are you running an active directory server on your network, and is the WinGate machine part of the active directory?

Does the DNS server for the active directory use WinGate for it's forwarder setting?

If so you may have a DNS loop. This can be intermittent, since WinGate monitors the responsiveness of all known DNS servers, it can sometimes start using a DNS server that is configured for a loop. We recommend that if you are using an AD, with an AD DNS server, you enter the IP address of the AD DNS server into the DNS servers tab in the WinGate advanced options application (from the Start->Programs->WinGate->Advanced Options menu).

No active directory in the net, and DNS server doesn't have it too.
DNS server based on Fedora Core Linux.
DNS servers tab in the WinGate is empty. Using system setting in a network card properties as i think.

OK, so there is still an internal DNS server, which means that depending on the DNS settings of your adapters in WinGate there is still the possibility for a DNS problem.

WinGate's DNS resolver uses the DNS servers specified in the adapter configs, DHCP etc - whatever the OS on that machine is using, WinGate will use. You can also specify specific DNS server(s) to use, and also specify DNS servers not to use (so that if the OS needs to use a DNS server that WinGate should not use (like an AD DNS server), then you can exclude it.

To specify a server, simply add its IP to the list of DNS servers in the DNS resolver configuration in GateKeeper. To exclude a DNS server, add its IP to the list in the DNS settings in WinGate Advanced Options application (in the WinGate program folder).
