FTP proxy from CuteFTP

Postby munrobasher » Apr 25 06 1:16 am

Currently evaluating WinGate as an alternative for ISA. HTTP working a treat, now looking at FTP proxy. When I configure my PC to access FTP via the proxy (VSERVER01), it connects okay and then gets errors like the following:

STATUS:> Getting listing "/Music/Barber, Samuel"...
STATUS:> Resolving host name VSERVER01...
STATUS:> Host name VSERVER01 resolved: ip = 192.168.1.5.
STATUS:> Connecting to HTTP proxy server VSERVER01:80 (ip = 192.168.1.5)...
STATUS:> Requesting server...
GET ftp://Rob:****@82.2.160.80/Music/Barber,%20Samuel HTTP/1.1
Host: 82.2.151.80:21
Range: bytes=0-
Referer: /
User-Agent: CuteFTP/7.0
Connection: Keep-Alive
Proxy-Connection: Keep-Alive
Accept: *.*, */*
Pragma: no-cache

STATUS:> Receiving reply...
HTTP/1.1 403 Access Denied
Server: WinGate 6.1.1 (Build 1077)
Date: Mon, 24 Apr 2006 12:22:54 GMT
Cache-control: no-cache
Connection: close
Content-type: text/html

ERROR:> 403 Forbidden.

Who is generating that "Access Denied" bit?

Thanks, Rob.

hi Rob

That error is normally sent back by WinGate as a result of an access issue indicated by the FTP server.

Problem is that because you are getting the client to make FTP requests via HTTP (via the HTTP proxy), it isn't talking FTP, so there is much reduced scope for the client to see what is going on.

We normally recommend not getting your web browser to use the HTTP proxy for FTP. Instead, if you leave the proxy settings for (say) IE blank for FTP (i.e in connection settings, proxy, choose advanced so you can configure a proxy per protocol), then it will use NAT which you can transparently intercept with the FTP proxy if you need to keep tabs on it.

That way the client browser will actually be talking FTP and then be able to prompt for username & password etc, or in general properly let you know what is going on.

you say in this case you are using CuteFTP as the client?

THat should be able to be configured to use WinGate's FTP proxy instead of the HTTP proxy.

Thanks - that worked. I'd simply checked the "Use Internet Explorer proxy settings" and that doesn't seem to work. Strange as using FTP in IE does work :-)

Cheers, Rob.
