Strange NAT

Postby killabee » Jun 09 06 8:32 am

Recently, I began experience strangle problems with WinGate.
When anybody tries to access my pc from the Internet, for example to ping (external ping is allowed), activity page displays me the following:

83.*.*.* (IP of the "pinger")
NAT: ICMP 83.*.*.* <-> 87.*.*.* (My ip)
NAT: ICMP 83.*.*.* <-> 87.*.*.* (My ip)
NAT: ICMP 83.*.*.* <-> 87.*.*.* (My ip)
NAT: ICMP 83.*.*.* <-> 87.*.*.* (My ip)
...
NAME_OF_MY_PC
NAT: ICMP 87.*.*.* (My ip) <-> 87.*.*.* (My ip)
NAT: ICMP 87.*.*.* (My ip) <-> 87.*.*.* (My ip)
NAT: ICMP 87.*.*.* (My ip) <-> 87.*.*.* (My ip)
NAT: ICMP 87.*.*.* (My ip) <-> 87.*.*.* (My ip)
NAT: ICMP 87.*.*.* (My ip) <-> 87.*.*.* (My ip)
NAT: ICMP 87.*.*.* (My ip) <-> 87.*.*.* (My ip)
NAT: ICMP 87.*.*.* (My ip) <-> 87.*.*.* (My ip)
NAT: ICMP 87.*.*.* (My ip) <-> 87.*.*.* (My ip)
...

Can u explain me what is going on?

Thank u in advance.

PS: Pinger doesn't receive any positive answer to the ping - timeout.

I wonder if you have your external adapter marked as internal by any chance?

Can u imagine how I wonder about this all? ))
Of course not - Auto detect (currently External).
Tried to mark manually as an external untrusted network - nothing changed.

I do know that it looks very-very odd.)
I'm using WinGate 6 with legal license.
As I've said on the activity page I see two blocks.
One of them contains records
NAT: ICMP 83.*.*.* <-> 87.*.*.* (My ip)
and the other one
NAT: ICMP 87.*.*.* (My ip) <-> 87.*.*.* (My ip).
where 87.*.*.* is ip of my external interface (ADSL through the modem in bridge mode) and 83.*.*.* is ip of the the other pc, who tried to ping me.
Several people tried to access me with different ips, but the result was the same.

So, the whole picture is smth like this

83.*.*.* (IP of the "pinger")
NAT: ICMP 83.*.*.* <-> 87.*.*.* (My ip)
NAT: ICMP 83.*.*.* <-> 87.*.*.* (My ip)
...

NAME_OF_MY_PC
NAT: ICMP 87.*.*.* (My ip) <-> 87.*.*.* (My ip)
NAT: ICMP 87.*.*.* (My ip) <-> 87.*.*.* (My ip)
...

Practically the same thing happens when somebody tryes to access my http or ftp server. Difference only in protocol.
Besides, after the problem occured, I tried to reinstall wingate in the same directory, but it didn't help.

The clue

Postby killabee » Jun 11 06 8:06 am

I've solved the problem. I think this information may be useful for u.
I'm using Win2000Pro.
I rebooted in safe mode and saw some more interfaces in the list of devices.
There were 1 WAN miniport (PPPoE) from my pervious cable modem,
3 WAN miniports (IP, L2TP, PPTP) from the other ADSL modem and
one Direct parallel port.
I've disabled all of them and everything is okay now.
Recently I used direct cable connection through LPT and just after that
I began to experience troubles with WinGate. Besides, I didn't use other modems
for a long time and even forgot about those miniports.
So, it seems that the reason of the problem is direct cable connection,
but I'm not sure.

Hmmm... That's good to know - we have to dig a bit deeper into this kind of scenario - thanks a lot for the information, Killabee!
