Limit of "ban list" entries for WWW Proxy Server

Postby bmw » Feb 08 07 9:58 am

Hello all,

I'm the sys admin for a small company and we use wingate 6.1.4 as our internet proxy server. I heavily use the "Ban list" under our WWW Proxy server service to block access to certain websites. I was wondering if there was a limit to the number of entries in this list or if there would be any problems if it got too large. I have hundreds of sites, keywords, domanis, etc in the ban list for a specific policy and am worried that I could run into problems if it got too large. As a side note, I really wish wingate provided some way of copying the ban/advanced lists from one policy to another.

Thanks
bmw

Hi

CPU loading for processing of all the entries can go up if you have too many. At the moment it's a linear search.

next version (WinGate 2007) can hook into an ODBC data source to run a custom-built (specified by the user with placeholders for session data) query. This lets you

a) share rules between services, and WinGates.
b) scale number of policies to a very large extent
c) integrate with existing database-based systems.
