Microsoft Update Page won't load with a proxy setting.

Postby mkervin » Feb 15 07 4:34 am

Hello All,

First, let me thank everyone in advance for any help I may receive, and here is my question.

I am running the latest version of Wingate on a Windows XP Professional machine that has IE 7 as the browser. Also, I have a DSL connection that I have going through a Linksys Broadband Firewall Router. My Wingate network card is set to 192.168.0.1 and my broadband firewall network card is set to obtain IP automatically. Both cards are internal and trusted in Wingate.

When I add the 192.168.0.1 proxy to our browser settings they cannot connect to the internet at all. On the Wingate machine I can connect to the internet but if I attempt to go to the Windows Update page I receive an error that this page cannot be displayed. If I remove the proxy settings from the browser the all pages display. (I did do what the knowledge base suggested and added it to the cache but that didn't solve the problem.)

I really want to get these machines running through the gate but if I can't I will remove wingate and just use my Router, and that's a shame because I have been using wingate since version 1. If you can help me iron out these problems I would really appreciate it; my emails for help from qbik in the past have gone unanswered so I am relying on you guys/gals for assistance.

Hi,

Firstly, I'm really concerned that you've emailed us and haven't received a reply, could you please email your address and I'll search our support desk to see if we've ever received an email from you? My email is mattp at qbik dot com.

Thanks,

Now, the first problem that I see is with the adapter usage setting in WinGate, the NIC facing the Internet (going to the router) should be marked as EXTERNAL. It should also be on a different IP address subnet to the INTERNAL adapter so if you're running 192.168.0.1 on the LAN adapter make sure that you're on a different subnet (eg 192.168.1.*) for the router connection.

What DNS settings have you got set in the WinGate server? The INTERNAL card should have no DNS set (unless you're running Active Directory) and the EXTERNAL adapter should point at the ISP DNS servers.

Likewise, the INTERNAL adapter should have no default gateway set and the EXTERNAL adapter should point at the router.

When the clients make a proxy connection to the WinGate server what do you see in the activity pane in GateKeeper?

Regards,

Matt

Hi again,

This could be related to a bug that we've found with IE7 through WinGate. What we've found is that if you go to the Windows update site then try to browse any other site you won't have any pages returned until you close and reopen the browser.

Does that sound like the problem that you're seeing?

Hello MattP and thank you for answering this thread I appreciate it. First, let me answer your first reply the best I can.

I have two cards in my Wingate Server the internal, which has an IP address which is set to 192.168.0.1 with no default gateway. My second card the one I consider the external card has an IP address of 192.168.1.100 with the following gateway 192.168.1.1 which is the router.

If I set the proxy in IE7 on the wingate server to 192.168.0.1 I can log onto any page except Windows update and then I have to shut down IE 7 and reopen it or I can't browse anywhere else. If I set the proxy on anyother clients to 192.168.0.1 they can't access anything nor does Wingate recognize them. However, if I remove the proxy I am fine and can browse the internet.

As for my emails check the address linked to this account. If you didn't receive my emails the Wingate must have discarded them as undeliverable but I know I sent them.

Now to your last response. I can't display the windowsupdate page at all but yes I must close the browser and reopen before I can access anything.

Ok, that sounds very much like the bug that we're seeing with IE7. If you disable caching in the WinGate server do the other machines browse ok until they also go to the Windows updates site?

At this stage we're still testing that bug so we don't have a time-frame or a fix just yet.

Regarding the support tickets, I do see one ticket that was jsssoftware at that domain. It was replied to and we received the auto-reply but nothing further. Other than that I can't find anything with that email domain. I'm very sorry that you got the impression that we wouldn't reply to a support ticket, we work very hard to ensure that we deliver a very high level of support to all of our customers. Unfortunately there are times when things don't go as planned, so please accept our apologies.

Regards,

Matt

Matt, thank you for the reply. I will test the clients shortly to see if this fixes my problem and let you know how I make out. I do know I disabled the cache yesterday or maybe the day before and it made no difference but I will try again today.

As for my request for help going unanswered I even posted them here and they too went unanswered here. If you search this forum you will see my request to get Nero to pass through the gate to no avail.

Thank You!
