Web Server in WWW Proxy

Postby defiantclass1 » Apr 05 07 1:14 pm

I just installed version 6.2.1

I am trying to redirect internal requests to a website "https://mywebsite.com" to my local web server where that site is hosted. I'm doing this so internal computers can access this site without going out first.

In the Web Server section of the WWW Proxy, I added a new server request. In the Host tab I put "mywebsite.com" and in the General tab I selected Reverse Proxy Request. Next to Server I put the IP address of my webserver, 192.168.0.4. Next to Port I put 443. I selected to Cache Request.

I'm sure I may have done this wrong, but I don't know what else to do. That's the best idea I could come up with from reading the help section on this topic.

Anyone have a better solution to accomplish what I'm trying to do?

Thank you.

Sorry, I led you astray on my response to your other post (here). I goofed. I was using netbios names for my intranets using www reverse proxy. However, if you have the WWW proxy service intercepting traffic you can edit the Hosts file on the WG server to include the local IP and URL of the web server to do what you want. Also ensure that in the DNS/WINS Resolver Configuration (in GateKeeper) the Lookup names in the system HOSTS file box is checked.

Thats cool Chris, no problem. I'll try this approach. Although, your previous suggestion, especially after I upgraded, seems to make perfect sense, like it should work. If what you described to me previously is not what this Web Sever part of Wingate is for (what I am trying to do) what is it for?? What I am trying to do seems like something Wingate should handle. Isn't what I am doing a very common thing? I'm not familiar with dealing with web pages I'm afraid.

But I'll change the host file and check the DNS/WINS Resolver.

Thanks!

Just to close the loop, edited the host file worked. I really appreciate it Chris.

I am still curious about the purpose of the redirect setting in the Web Server though. If you have a chance, could you elaborate on this? If it's purpose is not to do what I was trying to do, then what is it's purpose?

Thanks again!

You could, for example, host 5 different web sites utilising the same public IP address. Based on the Host Header the WWW service can then ask the right web server for the page and on behalf of the web server ( reverse proxy) serve the requested page back to the client. Internally it comes down to name resolution. If you don't want your internal clients "going out" to get the page ( using public domain name) and they are using the proxy features of WG, Somehow WG has to know not to go ask an external DNS server. It checks the Hosts file first and if it finds a match send the request to the listed IP. You could, in the Hosts file put the WG server LAN IP address and use the reverse proxy feature to your local web server.
