Installation Guide

Postby BiCanal » May 25 07 10:41 pm

Hello,

I have searched the website and can't find a simple installation guide. The downloadable chm files don't work ( I just get page not found )

What I want to do:
- Install WinGate on our file server to serve as an internet proxy for the office computers
- Configure Internet Explorer and net work traffic to go through the server
- I use static IPs so DHCP is not necessary
- Block certain users for access certain sites
- Block MSN messenger from certain users

I have installed WinGate but I really need a step by step guide...

Please help.

I have been able to change the Gateway on the local machines to point to the server and I can navigate just fine.

The problem is when I start the WWW Proxy Server I can not access the internet. I have put in the policies "Everyone" and no restrictions just to see if it would work.

WinGate is installed on a XP SP2 machine.

All traffic stops when I enable transparent proxy.

Also I see nothing in the log file.

Just thought I would add:

--> I believe what you are experiencing is Windows Security on the .chm file; to resolve it right click the .chm, select properties, and then Unblock.

The problem is when I start the WWW Proxy Server I can not access the internet. I have put in the policies "Everyone" and no restrictions just to see if it would work.

--> Confirm there is not port conflict on the WWW Proxy. In the image below the bottom pane shows your desired results for the binding, and the top pane indicates whether they are actually bound.

- I use static IPs so DHCP is not necessary

--> Using the "Assumed by ip address" authentication may be an option - you could also lock down a bit more with MAC address policies. You can find that in the Users tab in WinGate, and in your policies the level of authentication would need to be set to "User may be assumed"

- Block certain users for access certain sites

--> The main point to remember is when you create policies:
1. The policy with the most access will override the policy with the least access.
2. Within the Advanced tab of a users/group policy, the Filters are OR'd, and the criterions with Filters are AND'd.
3. Depending on the context of your network, the PureSight plugin may automate the access control:

Block MSN messenger from certain users

--> When LAN Clients are using the WWW Proxy Connection method / intercepts, then MSN Messenger will try to access a HTTP Resource named gateway.dll. When using the NAT or WinGate Internet Client (WGIC) connection method they will try to access a server port of TCP 1863. NAT and WGIC connections are controlled by the Extended Networking Service and Winsock Redirector Service respectively

What I can't figure out is why I can use WinGate as an internet gateway but when I enable "Transparent Proxy" with Port 80 Internet access is cut off. If I disable Port 80 entry or Transparent Proxy the Internet connection is restored.

Under the status column of Port 80 shows stopped.

The policies are set "Everyone" with unristricted rights.

Any help on this?[/img]

Sounds like a web server or another application is claiming port 80 - you could change the WWW Proxy to listen on 8080, and still have the intercept set to 80 - that should start the binding; I should have mentioned to check that status column.

Or to find out what application is claiming that port you could do a netstat command and then compare the PID for port 80 with the PID in the Windows Task Manager (you may need to select the PID column from the Task Managers view menu)

(Windows) Start menu --> run --> cmd --> netstat -ano
(Windows) Start menu --> run --> taskmgr
*You can also open the Task Manager with <Ctrl>+<Shift>+<ESC>

You were right. By changing the listening port to 8080 everything works fine.

I blocked access to messenger via Extended Networking.

Thanks ;)
