Bug Report?

Postby rboynton » Jun 20 07 9:25 am

I set up the system messages so that I would not see authentication messages. When I am looking at the console (firewall, for example) and someone does not authenticate properly, the system message tab will be given the focus, taking me away from what I was doing. It does not show anything in the window, but it grabbed the focus nonetheless.

After doing some things in different parts of the program, the gatekeeper program will suddenly close. when I reopen it, strange things will occur. Today it happened, and the system message tab was no longer visible, so I had to go back to view and reselect it. Also, The DNS service no longer showed any bindings. We could not browse the internet because it could not resolve addresses. I had not made any changes to that module before GK suddenly closed.
* Edit - If I stop/restart the WG service, the bindings reappear again.

Correct and thank you - I have submitted it to the bug tracking interface.

1. What version are you using?
2. Can you remember what part of WinGate you were configuring when it exited?
3. Did an error message pop up?
4. Are you using any plugins?
The changes between version 6.x releases can be reviewed here:

1. Am using 6.2.1
2. I'll try and recreate this, as it is happening frequently. I've done so much lately that I don't recall where the issue happened.
3. Had one error dialog "out of memory" appear, but none since. The GK interface usually just closes with no fuss.
4. Am using Puresight

Hi,

Thought in addition to above / does this change if you open Options --> Advanced --> Syslog Options and is 'Auto-Activate for Syslog' ticked?

If it is, removing this should keep focus for the user.

I ended up reloading my Proxy PC, and put it back to XP SP1. No other software on the box except for WG. It will now run for a couple of days before acting strangely. Have tried to consistently reproduce the problem of the GK application suddenly closing, but cannot. Here is what I do know:

I leave the GK program open all the time so I can connect to the PC via a remote control program (Remote Administrator) to see what is going on.

I often flip back and forth between the activity and firewall tabs. The other thing I do regularly is to go into the user policy and change the time setting so others can or cannot use the internet.

Since I got that one "out of memory" error notice pop up, I'm thinking maybe there is a process in the GK application that has a memory leak. Since I leave the app open all the time, I theorize that it eventually runs out of resources and closes suddenly. When it does that, I can reopen it immediately, but there are areas that do not display properly (i.e. the user tab/policy does not show anybody in the list). To fix things, I stop/restart the WG service. It then runs ok for a day or two before doing it again. The PC has 1g of RAM, but is only using about 150 megs regularly.

Over the years we've found that leaving GateKeeper open is not a good idea. It uses up a lot of CPU time and can signifcantly slow things down.

Have you tried running GateKeeper from a remote system? That would eliminate the need for Remote Administrator. (Requires Professional or Enterprise version of WinGate.)

Never even considered doing so. The proxy box with GK is so lightly loaded that it is loafing around... even witg GK left open. I may experiment with this in time. Thanks for the tip.
