Can i make bandwidth control with 1 NIC?

Postby stlony » Sep 07 07 9:26 pm

First i read all topics & help file related to bandwidth control and i tried but failed. I see that there is a short in explaining this option with an examples:
1- if i want to make first priority to any special internet usage like browsing then the other usage.
2- if i want to limite a user usage.
yes i read like those cases but really didn't work with me.

i am using wingate with one NIC as DHCP, NAT & DNS everything is working fine. the users are all assumed. The question is can i make bandwidth control with just one NIC? if i can here is the problem:
one of my users (A) (192.168.1.2) is complaining from internet speed while he playing warcraft online. in the same time there is another user (B) (192.168.1.5) make download with peer to peer program. i want to make the first priority to the user who playing online and here is the info:
user (A) (192.168.1.2) connect to game server on port 3724 every time (note this is the server port not his port)
Wingate on (192.168.1.1)

How can i do this and if it can't do it except with another NIC also please show me how to make it with another one?

I might have to wait until tomorrow - I want to make sure I nail this for you. My colleague will bring in his gaming laptop so I can check out how many packets are being sent per second.

I only got an hour with the laptop today and I was not happy with the results - there will be a delay with this.

And I am not having a good run - I will update this when I can.

Background:

- First test was with that laptop and did not go how I expected and was for a short time.
- Second test was today on a Dual Xeon box I just bought - and the power supply just blew and there is a two month wait for the proprietary part from Dell (gutted).
- My other gaming box is a couple of hundred km from work so I will have to continue this when I am home in the weekend.
- I would usually get some of our senior staff memebers to help me with this but they are busy with the next major release of WinGate.

Am really sorry about this - I just don't want to give bad advice.

Sorry about this - from all my tests I could not get a solution I would be happy to provide. There was nothing I could do to lag the game on my home internet connection. I had Azureus running, large ISO downloads from Microsoft, Windows Updates etc .. and my internet connection would not max out.

When I tested this at work with the same kind of internet connection (ADSL and same ISP) - Wow worked lovely under no load, crap under load - and when there was no load but throttling on it was crap latency. So I have to accept failure with trying to get you a good solution and a bit of education on this.
