NAT Processing from rel 5.1 and forward ?

Postby moveon » Dec 13 03 4:56 am

Hi.
I have tried to upgrade my rel 5.0.7 with all levels after that, also
5.2.2 wich was just released.
With neither of these versions after 5.0.7 i have had any success in
getting the NAT processing to work. I can see in the log thats the
request is coming from the client machine, and NAT: TCP is in the
activity log, but there is NO data back to the client. Saying this
i mean http trafic. If i change to use the Proxy Service, then it
works ok. Also the same problem wich for example FTP.
I have done both 'upgrade' and complete uninstall/install. Same
scenario in both cases. Going back to rel 5.0.7, and all is fine again.
Any one that might have any idea what to look for here ?

No, this is an 'dialup' line one way modem using Satellite for receival
on an Harmonic Cyberstream Network Card.
Also using a PPTP, for Microsoft VPN to signon by using
VPN to HSI Lite product.
As stated, works all ok on 5.0.7, and also the versions before that.

versions ? I bought Wingate from Deerfield, but since they no
longer work with this product, i come here..

So is that satellite card integrated with the modem card?

What I am trying to figure out is whether the modem plus satellite appear to the OS as one single interface or two.

The main thing that changed between 5.0.7 and 5.0.8 onwards was the way our ENS driver hooks protocols and miniports.

It is possible that an issue that this creates results in us being unable to send on an interface from the driver itself.

Can you point me to the site for this hardware?

Also, in the mean time, Transparent Redirection should work to get HTTP working via NAT up to the proxy, but won't help for many other protocols.

They are not integrated. The modem is an Sweex internal modem
and the Cyberstream Receiver is an Harmonic DVB PCI Card, showing up as an network adapter. The homepage is harmonicinc.com, but I havn't been able to find any information regarding this card from there.
It's around 4 years old now.

I have the same problem. I am using version 5.0.7 and every time I try to upgrade then NAT does not work. I am using Windows 2000 SP4 and a Dialup connection. Version 5.0.7 work but after I upgrade or even do a new install then NAT stops working. I can rerun the version 5.0.7 install then all works again. I have tried version 5.0.10 and the latest version 5.2.2.
I use DHCP with the range of 192.168.0.11-192.168.0.254.
Address 192.168.0.1-192.168.0.10 are excluded.
The Wingate server is using 192.168.0.1
There are two network cards in the computer only one is used on the network. The other is set to 192.168.0.2 and has no network connections.
The Dialup is a external 56k modem on a normal phone line.
The ISP assigns the IP address and the DNS server address.
All the client machines are Windoes 98,2000,XP

Please Help
Edward

Edward,

Could you post your connection information?

This will help the developers track down a solution.

Thanks!

Is the 192.168.0.2 card physically plugged in to a network ?

Can you ping anything outside your network?
If you can do pinging, try reducing the MTU on one of the client machines.

NO, I can not ping anything out side my network. I can still ping on my provate network. The client machines will start and then the server dials but all DNS requests fail.

The Wingate server is using 192.168.0.1
There are two network cards in the computer only one is used on the network. The other is set to 192.168.0.2 and has no network connections.
The Dialup is a external 56k modem on a normal phone line.

Give the unused card an IP on a different subnet (i.e.192.168.1.1)

Then, right click on Network Places, choose properties, in the Advanced menu, select Advanced settings, in the top (Connections) pane verify that the 192.168.0.1 interface is at the top of the binding order.

In fact, since this adapter is unused, you can uncheck the Internet Protocol box.
Just for Info, you did not mention, is the Wingate server a Domain Controller?

I have changed the second network card IP address I tried 10.10.0.1.
The problems is still the same. When I upgrade from version 5.0.7 to 5.2.2 then DNS does not work. My private network does work, all machines can connect to each other. Wingate conects to the internet but no DNS from all clinets machines and also the Wingate server. If I reinstall version 5.0.7 then all works.
This is not a domain controller. I run Windows 2000 sp4.

What do the clients have in TCP/IP properties for DNS?
Check this, Wingate DNS server listening 192.168.0.1 and DNS/WINS resolver on the DNS tab your ISP's DNS in the field?
Alow request to initiate dialer?

OK, I'm just throwing things out It just doesn't make sense.

As I said before I use DHCP, the default Gatway is set to 192.168.0.1 the IP address of the Wingate server. I am running version 5.0.7 and everything is OK. All clients work and the Wingate server machine also works. When ever I try to upgrade, first I tried version 5.0.10 and now I am trying version 5.2.2 then DNS does not work. If I reinstall version 5.0.7 the all works again. For now I will stay on version 5.0.7 all I wanted to do was use the new plugins. I see in the forum that I am not the only one with this problem. If I read correctly the DNS was rewritten after version 5.0.7 and other people are having the same problem. Is it that I have two network cards or that I connect through a dialup connection or both. As soon as I can get DSL in my aera then I will need both network connections and not use the dialup. I will keep trying newer versions as they arrive.

Thanks Ed

moveon, I think we both have the same problem. Two network connections and a modem. I will wait until a newer version of Wingate is out to try again.

Can you send us the list of all network drivers that are listed in the Network properties window for the external adapter (Network and Dial-up Connections/<Ext Connection>/Components list)?
