Blocking MSN messenger through WinGate depends on what connection method you are using. When passing through port 80 (usually via WWW Proxy Server) it will try to connect to an HTTP URL Containing Gateway.dll - And when it is using the NAT or WinGate Internet Client (WGIC) conneciton method it will connect to Server Port 1863.

There is a good post on doing this here: http://forums.qbik.com/viewtopic.php?t=17723&view=next

When you create the new policy instead of choosing the default "Everyone" simply choose "specify user or group" if you use this option you will need to be using some kind of authentication so WinGate can ID the user.

One thing to note.

WinGate policies grant access. So, you need to always think about what you wish to allow, rather than what you wish to block. Everything that is not explicitly allowed is blocked, so if you wish to allow MSN for some users and not others, then the policy that grants access to MSN should be specific to the users you wish to be able to use MSN (i.e. members of some group), and other policies which grant access should not allow MSN access.

e.g.

2 recipients

1. Everyone can do anything except MSN
Applies to: everyone
Banlist: block server messenger.hotmail.com etc

2. Some people can use MSN
Applies to: MSN allowed users
no other restrictions.
