Gatekeeper is requiring authenticateto rprint

Postby eric » Apr 16 08 5:35 am

Can anyone help me.

We are using a D-Link DI-704P as a printer server. Why is that everytime we restarted a remote computer connected to the switch it requires a authentication from the gatekeeper to be able to print to the printer server. By the way the printer server is connected to the switch where the computer with the gatekeeper is also connected. Thanks

Hi

Are you using the WinGate client on these machines?

Hi Eric,

It sounds like you will need to give the print spooler application on your client computers access to the local network in the WinGate clients. Doing so will stop the WinGate client from intercepting sockets and relaying sockets for the print server to the WinSock Redirector Service in WinGate, so the print spoolers will be able to bypass WinGate and communicate with the local print server directly.

To add an application to the WGIC and specify it as local access only:

- First, identify which exe is responsible for printing to the print server

- Open the WGIC controls from Start -> Programs -> WinGate Internet Client -> WinGate Internet Client Aplet

- Goto the System Applications tab

- Click Add

- Enter the name of the exe responsible for printing, e.g. spoolsv.exe

- Select "Local network access only"

- Click OK, then Apply

After doing this, the application you specified will connect through the local network, rather than through the WGIC.

Hi Logan,

Everything is working well now. Thanks for you help.

Just an inquiry, this will not affect the usual authentication with the other programs/application right? This will only be for printing purposes right? Thanks in advance.

That is correct. Only applications that are specified in the WGIC as local network access only will bypass the WGIC authentication requirement. All other applications will still connect through the WRP.

Hi Logan,

Thanks for the answers to my inquiry.

I'm glad to report that some of the wgic are working well in bypassing using the spoolsv.exe but unfortunately there are some wgic that still pass the wgic in running the application even though it is indicated in the system applications. Thanks in advance.

Logan,

Sir why is it sometimes the solution that you gave me work but sometimes it won't. It still requires authentication. Is there an additional thing that we should have done aside from putting it in the system application and making it local? Thanks.

Do anyone in here have other solution aside from what Mr. Logan gave me because the solution work only to a few remote computers and some are still requiring authentication. Thanks.

Are the computers running different operating systems? Maybe it's a different exe that's connecting to the print server, instead of the default Windows spooler?

Logan,

Thanks for the email.

Nope they all are running in Windows XP. Also, I can see it in in the Activity pane of the Gatekeeper that the program running in the WRP is the spoolsv.exe. I hope you can help me so that it wouldn't take the slots of internet access allotted to us by our license. Thanks.

If you are still seeing spoolsv.exe in WinGate's activity panel, that means the client must not have been configured to give spoolsv.exe local access on these computers. Can you upload some screen shots of a failing WGIC configuration to the forum? We may be able to point out what's wrong for you.
