IP Address must be renewed often

Postby mflowers » Dec 20 03 8:43 am

Our ip address must be renewed manually after a short period. Is this a know issue and are there any fixes available?

Is this on the server or the client ?

IP address need renew

Postby mflowers » Dec 21 03 5:06 pm

This is on the clients, the server is not a problem. We have turned off the time out feature, and upgraded to 5.2. I reloaded the server with a fresh copy of NT 4.0 sp6a with nothing else running. Same problem.

Are you using WinGate's DHCP Server to assign the IP address, or is it
from an OS DHCP server ?

If you are using WinGate's DHCP Server, what mode do you have it running in ? (Automatic, Partial or Manual) Do you have any scopes created and what is the lease expiration set to there ?

We are not using Wingate DHCP or DNS, they are handled by a BDC at our locaation (win nt 4.0 sp6a).
The leases are set for 3 days.
We use the Java client for authentication and it's connection stays up, just get "page cannot be found", after renewing ip (ipconfig /renew) page is displayed.

We're narrowing it down ... but, some more questions first.

1. Does the lease expire at all during the time between when it was working and when it stops working ?

2. Does logging out of the Java Client (Closing all browser windows, etc.) and logging back in affect it at all, or is only the ipconfig/renew that fixes it ?

The lease does not expire, in fact while trying to reply to your post I had to renew, and no, closing the browser and logging off-on again to Java Client does not help.

have you disabled the DHCP server in WinGate as well then?

I can't imagine why your clients would need renewing like that, but that renewal process also re-assigns other IP settings like DNS etc.

If you aren't using WinGate's DNS, how is your WinNT server getting DNS to give to the clients?

Ok I will try to answer as best as I can, our BDC has www zone pointing to DNS server of our ISDN provider. However, that address cannot be pinged from the lan, only from the proxy.
DHCP and DNS are disabled on the Wingate Proxy.
When pinging the ISP DNS sever I get Destination Unreachable from our router 192.168.20.1(Not the ISDN router which is 192.168.3.1).

I tried a /refreshdns and that also works....turned on the DNS service on Wingate, but not sure where to configure it. The logs show names resolved...do I have to point it at a root server or is this discovered during setup..and how will this affect my NT DNS server?

I had to diable the DNS service on the Wingate Server, it was causing problems with our NT DNS server (internal only...for now).
I still have to renew IP after a short time of inactivity.
Any suggestions?
