How to use Wingate as WIFI Hotspot controller

Postby raghavkakar » Oct 11 08 9:13 am

Hi Adrien,

Was just wondering if i can use wingate as WIFI hotspot controller....

Presently using Wingate in LAN mode with 2 LAN card ( 1 for WAN access 2 for LAN access ) for routing internet access to users on the LAN

Now i have added a WIFI router and wingate machine is the gateway for the WIFI router. The router is in open unsecured mode.

Is there any way to make use of wingate where new users can connect thru the WIFI router and let me know how to make authentication system for new users joining the network where in they get a authentication page(pref. web browser based) as a opening page and logon with a password in order have WAN(internet)access from wingate server after they have authenticated from the server.

In WinGate 6, you could use Java authentication. The Java authentication method delivers a Java application to the client computer which allows the user to enter their username and password to authenticate. There are a couple of points to note about Java auth.
- It only works when using the WinGate user database (not while using an NT user database)
- It requires that the client computer has the Java Runtime Environment (or other equivalent) installed

You can find out more information about using Java authentication in the following knowledgebase articles.

KB: Using Java Authentication
KB: Authentication Overview

I also recommend that you check if your WIFI router can do Layer 2 isolation. This is a very powerful feature for WIFI hotspots as it prevents the clients of the WIFI network from communicating with each other.
