WinGate + WiFi USB + iPod Touch

Postby Naki » Sep 28 08 9:14 am

I have the following system:
Windows Vista 32 bit
WiFi USB dongle ZyXEL G220 v2
100 MBit LAN card
iPod Touch (WiFi client)

WiFi is setup to use an ad-hoc network. The ad-hoc network is setup not using Vista's options for that, but via the ZyXEL WiFi Utility tool, which runs in the background and appears in the Vista Tray area.
WinGate is 6.2.2.

I have checked the WiFi dongle IP via cmd ---> ipconfig and set it in the Proxy settings of the iPod Touch.
I have created an admin user with a password, and set the same user in the Proxy settings of the iPod Touch.
DHCP is disabled in WinGate config options.

Problem:
Now, when I run Safari on the iPod Touch and try to browse any site, nothing happens in the WinGate Engine Monitor - no sign of activity, no Guest or Admin access.
I have added the iPod Touch's IP to the WinGate Options for the WWW service. What am I doing wrong? This works better on WinXP Pro...
Other details: System has one LAN card, set to a static IP. WiFi card is set to dynamic (DHCP) IP, as is the iPod Touch's WiFi IP.
I have set the Internet connection, which is a PPPoE style connection, to the restricted status (Private or Public/forgot which one, but the one that is more restricted).
The WiFi connection and the LAN connection are set to the Accessible status (Public or Private/forgot which one, but the one that is discoverable).

Any ideas why the iPod Touch won't connect to WinGate? WinGate is currently running in Trial mode.
A third-party iPod Touch app, SplashShopper, can sync to the Vista PC OK via WiFi, so that means WiFi is working.

My experience with Vista is limited, so I may have missed something.

Are you running WinGate on the Vista computer?

First thing to note is that WinGate's Extended Network Driver that enables NAT and routing in WinGate does not work on Vista yet. Therfore, if the iPod is trying to NAT through WinGate, the connection will inevitable fail. As long as the iPod is manually configured to use the WWW Proxy service in WinGate, then there should be little hassle.

Another point to note is that Vista's in built security is rather overbearing. It's possible that Vista may be blocking the iPod from accessing WinGate. Make sure the wireless adaptor on the Vista computer has been set as a Home network adaptor and not a Public network adaptor. Also, make sure port 80 is open in Vista's firewall.

Are you talking about the ENS driver? I chose not to install it.
Anyway, it is now working, so thanks! I changed the WiFi connection to Home/Private, and added Port 80 to the Firewall Exceptions list. The iPod Touch can now browse the Internet via Safari, download App Store software/etc.

I'm glad that solved the problem. I have spent many hours ripping my hair out trying to fix problems in Vista, only to find that the network adaptor had been set as public. I'm sure you can appreciate what I mean when I say "Vista's in built security is overbearing" :).

Windows 2008 has proven to be a bit easier to work with, but that's to be expected from an OS designed to host server applications.

Hi Bethanika,

You won't find the answer to that question on this forum I'm afraid.
