6.5 ?

Postby oliverm » Oct 23 08 10:42 pm

Hi

Just saw a post from the 15th of this month saying that 6.5 would be out on that day, or the next. Its now the 23rd and our Update feature in Wingate 6.2 doesnt tell me there is a new update.

Any news on it ?

Hi

Just had a few Vista issues that cropped up in testing at the last minute. We're down to the last one we know of, relating to dialup for which we have a plan and hope to get it into testing today for a release mid next week.

The question you must have had for the 600,000th time - when will the new version of Wingate be released?

I have been hanging out for the last 6 months to buy the new version as I've got a Vista machine I want to use as the server - and want to make sure to get the Wingate version that is optimised to operate on this OS. The minute the product goes GA I'll be there with bells on buying it - as I have a strong need to manage and monitor the usage across my family network.

I know how hard it is to write good software - so thanks team for all your efforts to reduce defect density before release; I know I'll enjoy the benefits of your QA process.

Looking forward to installing and using the new version.

Hi

we have no further issues with it that we are aware of, so running some final testing on it, and barring any more show-stop issues, we expect to release tomorrow.

Just an update,

found an issue related to dial-in connections, which we've been working on today, introduced into the new driver (6.2.2 was fine). So looks like we're looking at next week for a release now, since can't release on a Friday.

No no it is all ok they are still in time.. they mean friday next year :-)...

I am wondering why they announce again and again some mysterious dates when they can not hold it??.

Wingate 2008 .. still not released so they announced a 6.5 to support Windows Vista/2003..

Let wait some additional weeks .. maybe they can release it by end of this year surly the software will be 100 % perfect then without any known issues..

Seems they have a very very good beta testing finding every error to ensure 100 % Quality

frputz,

It's just like you. You promised to go away and you haven't done it.

I suppose you have issues that make you keep coming back. Did Beta testing reveal these?

We're hoping those issues get resolved soon too.

Whoops did not intend to stir it up like that. OK, I was a bit sarcastic which was ill mannered and I apologise.

Just that I renewed my wingate support when the next update was wingate 2007 (now 2008) and I recently bought VPN licenses which are at the moment useless to me because I need the Vista driver.

Other than that I have had wingate for years and have been happy with it and the support I received from the guys.

no problem.

Sorry for the continued delays. Once we'd worked out the other issues, and got back into soak testing, the system is now locking up after about a day under constant load in some circumstances. We think we have a handle on that issue.

Hi

Good news is we solved the stability issue we were seeing, but there's another problem crept in with dialup on Vista, which we hope to have fixed today for a release next week.

turned out the dialup issue (not showing up) was to do with how the dialup connection was created in the OS - it was set for "only me" rather than allowing other users, so wasn't in the global phonebook (which is what WinGate uses)

So, there are currently no known issues with the 6.5 we have in testing, therefore we can expect a release early next week.

Team - thanks for your focus on quality - I appreciate it.

Wingate is a product that is incredibly complex and will be subjected to all sorts of uses and abuses once released; people will depend on it to operate near flawlessly and (inappropriately) expect it to cope with EVERYTHING.

Whilst no software can be created without defects I trust that your emphasis on production readiness and execution quality will outweigh the noise in the end.

Hold fast and keep up the good work.

Well I'd like to have a fully working version before its released. I tried the Beta a few weeks back and it wouldn't run properly on my Windows 2000 Advanced Server. The ENS wouldn't load. Backed out to 6.2.2.

Oh yeah, I checked that out for you Al. Q&A has the most recent driver running on 2K in the lab, so it seems to be fine.

"So, there are currently no known issues with the 6.5 we have in testing, therefore we can expect a release early next week."

The last official upate 2.5 weeks ago posted on 14th Nov. If this has been release somewhere and I missed it ignore me.

I agree with all thats been said about quality. I am an engineer by training but moved into product line marketing so I know a bit about this. Hopefully its not a moan but constructive advice from someone who's been there.

If you need another 1,2 or 6 weeks, take them but please sort out your communications and deliver a consistant message. I know that its easy for an engineer to say well my bits done so I think its good to go (and make a public statement), but they over look, regression test, generating release notes, code isolation for archive and the most crucially, when you delete all of the object modules and do a "make all" (as you should), were all of the cross module changes implimented.

Suggest that you give us an update but before doing so, ensure that all internal stake owners agree with any new dates.

Other than that, please keep up the good work, I still think this is a great and flexible product.

Other posters please do not use my posting to take cheap shots at QBIK!

Adrien,

Many thanks for the update.

I understand that this has probably been a stressfull year for all at QBIK and the pressure applied by us as users does not help.

May I take the opportunity to thank you guys for all of the hard work and hope that what ever religious persuasion you may be you enjoy the break afforded by Christmas and have a peacfull, relaxiing time.

I still thinks this product rocks. When one analyses the time taken to rebuild a machine after an attack, it pays for itself easily and you should be proud of it.

Hello Adrien: XP 64 bits support translates to Win2003 64 bits support?

release notes are here http://www.wingate.com/products/wingate/faq.php?f=2

AS for 2k3 64, we believe it should work since they share the same NDIS implementation, however it hasn't been fully tested yet.

Hi Adrien or anyone else,

What if any defaults have you changed in 6.5.1.

I overwrote my previous 6.2.2 with 6.5.1 expecting it to just pick up settings as before. It would then not connect via my ADSL dial up adapter.

Restoring my ghost image of the 6.2.2. install and it connect fine so I know my system/adsl line is OK. Any clues?

Best Regards

Hi Neil

We tested with a number of ADSL PPPoE adapters. As for WinGate settings, it uses the exact same settings as 6.2.2.

Does the connectivity issue affect NAT or proxy connections, or local browsing from that machine or a mixture (which?)

P.s. is this actually PPPoE, or PPPoA? Or something else?

Also which OS is this on?

Hi Neil

I see a change in the handling of dialup connections which looks a bit suspicious. Would you be able to test a driver to see if it fixes the problem for you?

Which OS is this on?
