Connection Timout - Win MCE

Postby ramarsh01 » Dec 31 08 5:25 pm

On December 19th i installed the latest version of WIngate and then on the 20th my problem started. I am trying to download the latest TV Guide using windows media center but it keeps failing. I know the problem is not with the configuration of windows MCE because i connected the computer directly to the internet bypassing the wingate server and it worked as expected. The mediacenter pc is connected to wingate as a router it doesn't have the wingate client tools installed, on the wingate server i disabled logging and unchecked the sessions but still no luck. What else should i try?

thanks.

What OS are you running Wingate under?

Also, how is the client connected - is it pure NAT, WWW proxy redirect?

I'm running windows 2000 server. I believe the WIndows MCE box is connected using NAT. I do not have the wingate client tools installed on the machine, but i do believe the wingate server is setup to use the WWW proxy server because the filters i have in place work. I'm not sure if I'm explaining this correctly or not, but when i create a URL Filter for example do not let anyone goto a site with apartments in it i can't get to the website on the WIndows MCE box. Does this answer your quesetion?

Do you need more information? Should i send you my configuration?

Also their are other users who connect to Wingate without using Nat I have the wingate client tools installed on the machine.

I'm not sure if this is a problem or not but ever since i installed the new version of wingate I'm seeing this error message the plugin is not supported by this version of wingate. The plugin is the antivirus but I do not own it i may have downloaded a trial version.

This is the response from another thread viewtopic.php?f=12&t=39346 (Windows Meda Center cannot download program guide), i thought it would be a good idea not have the same issue posted in two different threads

The Media center is a client PC on the network, I am using NAT to connect to the internet. I do not see any firewall issues, the only place im looking at is on the gatekeeper firewall tab.

This is the error log i see in the WWW proxy

Debug: [pes.tvdownload.microsoft.com/epgdata/us/1/2699585293/58/89/48/28498856/28498856_ListingData.txt] Copy to use: SERVER

Terminated exit code 1

debug: Unintercepted Server Response code 206 - I have never seen this error message with the previous version of wingate.

then MCE tried connecting to another site

code 206 means a partial download was requested (BITS commonly does this).

The unintercepted means WinGate didn't mess with the response.

Do you have any WinGate plugins installed? These typically block partial requests to prevent viruses from being downloaded in parts.

This is the interesting thing when i click the plugins button in gatekeeper i do not see any plugins listed. But when i start wingate i get this system message

Object: AntiVirus
Time: 31-Dec-2008 22:50:31
Message ID: 0000
Description: This plugin is not supported on WinGate 6.5.0 (Build 1203). Please contact Qbik New Zealand at http://www.wingate.com/ to obtain an updated version of this plugin.

If you are using NAT why is there a WWW Proxy log, intercepts and proxies could be a problem with this perhaps?

On this page here there is some stuff about problems with proxies, time zones and other pointers to the service.

Nev,

Thanks for the link I will take a look to see if it will help. As i mentioned in my first post everything was working fine until i installed the new version of Wingate I am in the process of backing up the computer and will install the previous version to see if that resolves the problem.

I have it setup to use transparent redirect on the WWW proxy webservice, this allows me to restrict certain websites based on user groups.

What about using a proxy auto config script to put the 'tv' traffic through as NAT, this one below could work where you could substitute the IP and port for your server then set the Internet Options of the client to use this script directly on the harddisk or via a IIS if it's available.

function FindProxyForURL(url, host)
{
// variable strings to return
var wingate = "PROXY 192.168.0.1:80";
var proxy_no = "direct";
if (shExpMatch(url, "http://pes.tvdownload.microsoft.com*")) { return proxy_no; }
// Proxy anything else
return wingate
}

Other than that if you turn the intercepts off, does it work?

I turned off the HTTP transparent redirect and everything worked as expected. I was able to download the tv guide but this is not a good solution for me because i restrict HTTP sites for certain users. The next thing i did was install the previous version 6.2.2 turned transparent redirect on and everything worked as expected i was able to download the tv guide. For some reason I can't download the TV guide using the transparent redirect with the latest version.

Qbik support team:
I will be more the willing to send log files and configuration settings for both 6.2.2 and the latest version if you want. In my opinion their is a bug with the transparent redirect in the current version of wingate.

Do you use caching?

It could work again with intercepts if an exception for caching is made for the site, or just turn caching off as a test.

There is no intercept on the server for SSL connections is there, these should not be if they are.

Thank you for all of your help, it doesn't make a sense how one version of wingate works fine for me but another version doesn't. When i upgraded and downgraded the version i didn't make any configuration changes. Maybe the new 6.5 version changed a setting that I don't know about that is causing me the problems.

Nev wrote:Do you use caching?

This is what i have for caching properties in Gatekeeper
General tab - Nothing is checked.
What to cache Tab - Cache everything is checked.

Nev wrote:There is no intercept on the server for SSL connections is there, these should not be if they are.

I'm not sure where i should look for this. The https tab in the www proxy server settings has the allow conected[non secure] option checked.

Latter today i will install the latest version and turn off caching to see if that helps.

Hi

There were some changes to the HTTP proxy in 6.5 to resolve issues with chunking that were causing stability issues. It's possible those changes may have caused there to be an issue with this site.

We will need to check those URLs to see what is going on.

Regards
