Blocking Messanger

Postby mussa » Dec 23 03 7:37 am

Hi

I really need to know how to block MSN, ICQ, Yahoo and AOL on WinGate
I am using the trial version and if I make this work we might buy the product.

I am running WinGate 5.0.1
ENS is running
Internet Sharing is perfect.

Please I need some help with that.

Thanks Renato

Hi Renato,

Apologies for the long delay in responding to you. The first thing to do would be to download and install version 5.2.2. (That is the latest)

Secondly, the easiest way to do this, as you're using ENS, is to block the appropriate ports for these applications. If you go into Extended Networking, and switch to the Port Security Tab you will see you can specify actions for:

"Internet connections", "LAN connections to the WinGate PC" and "LAN connections to the internet".

Switch to "LAN connections to the internet" and then add all the ports for the various applications you want to block. Choose "Drop Packet" as your default action. You can choose to not be notified, so it does not fill up your firewall log.

However, some of these applications have rather insidious methods of connecting (Mostly to traverse firewalls successfully). In that case, you might need to enable T/R for the appropriate services so you can apply some rather specific policies (Such as ban lists, etc.) from the proxy level.

Those are the ways I can think of off the top of my head. Perhaps there is a WinGate user out there who has configured something like this before who might be able to make some alternative suggestions ?

Hello,
I managed to block MSN Messnger evenif anyone tries to connect using different port or anything.

in BAN list add "Site contains hotmail in the URL"
thats it
it will block msn messenger..

how ?

When u connect msn messenger first it goes to Hotmail server to check for authentication and sice we have blocked hotmail so all packets will be dropped. and it wont work.

now another question will arise here...

hotmail mails will work ?
YES it will work coz when u type hotmail.com in the address bar, it never goes to hotmail.com site it will redirect you to passport.net or passort.com
so your mail will work just fine.

now the same thing can not be done with the yahoo messenger coz if we add yahoo in ban list then none of the yahoo services will work (yahoo mail, yahoo groups) and yahoo messenger can work on any port so it will be difficult to block yahoo messenger.

let me know if anyone finds solution to block yahoo messenger.

regards
Deep

To block Yahoo Messenger, try banning access to sites "cs.yahoo.com" and "scsa.yahoo.com" and block application "ypager.exe". Should work.

The link below provides a list of ports and their associated applications. Forgot to include it in my earlier post. May be of interest...
