Strange ftp problem

Postby dezt » Jun 18 09 12:44 am

I have a problem with ftp, if I try to use ftp from my wingate server it connects fine. If i try to connect through the wingate server it doesn't work, I have tried using filezilla and ws_ftp, as well as the command line ftp, they all time out.

To connect to the internet from the wingate server we have to enter a proxy address in internet explorer, this is because we go through a proxy at our internet supplier. This doesn't block our ftp though as we can connect to ftp from the wingate server.

I have entered the external proxy address in the ftp service but this doesn't let us go through the wingate server. In the WWW service we have entered the external proxy address and it allows us to browse the internet.

Can anyone shed any light on how I can connect to FTP through the wingate server, whenever I try I just get "220 WinGate Engine FTP Gateway ready" then it times out when i try and open any ftp site.

that error sounds like you're setting your web browser (which you use for FTP?) to use a proxy for FTP to WinGate on port 21.

Change the port to 80 in the browser. Web browsers doing FTP through a proxy use HTTP to do the FTP request (strange but true).

I don't use my browser for ftp, i'm trying to use filezilla, in the settings i've setup the ftp proxy to point to my wingate server. This allows me to connect to the wingate server, but traffic is not going through the server to the ftp host i want to connect to.

In the ftp service on the wingate server i have entered my external proxy settings in the "PIPE requests through cascaded proxy server" Which are the same as the settings that allow me to ftp out from the wingate server.

It almost seems as if the wingate ftp proxy is blocking any traffic to go through the wingate ftp service.
