NAT Adapter assignment with multiple external adapters

Postby rebelldtu » Jun 23 09 3:02 am

Hi,
I wonder if somebody could help me with this?

I am using Wingate 6.6.1
I have two external interfaces attached to two seperate ADSL lines.
One named Staff one named Students.
I have an one Internal interface
I have set the WWW Proxy Server service to use only one adapter (Staff) Under "Properties-Gateways" within the WWW Proxy Server properties.
I am also using NAT.
My question is how do I assign the Extended Network Driver (NAT) to use only the other interface (Student)? Does it load balance across the two adapters? Basically what I am looking for is The NAT properties so I can assign that adapter as I did with the WWW Proxy Server Service.

Many Thanks
Paul

Hi

the NAT function uses the route table to choose an adapter / default gateway to use. This is then based on the metric.

So to make the NAT choose one interface over another, you need to assign it a lower metric. You can do this in the TCP/IP properties for the adapter. You may need to instead raise the metric of the one you don't want it to use if the metric is already 1 for the other adapter.

Hi
Thanks Adrien, will that affect all other traffic or solely the NAT with Wingate? My objective is to split the two services down individual adapters but I also have an SMTP feed coming in and various other bits that go out that I would not want to be affected by adjusting the metric.
Cheers

Hi

Changing the metric will affect everything that uses the route table, so yes, that would also affect other traffic.

If you have specific ports you wish to go through the other adapter, you can use a TCP mapping proxy to intercept those ports and force the connections out the non-default adapter.
