Hi

Have you tried upgrading WinGate? The current version shows me this site ok.

No, we don't. Our license was expired. We can't upgrade anymore. Could you please check with our version 6.1.4. We use Microsoft Internet Explorer.

Thanks a million,

You can still use your license on the latest version. WinGate licenses never expire. Version protection can expire, but that is only required to cover you for major version upgrades, and 6.6.1 will still honour your old key.

Adrien,

I did upgrade to 6.6.1. We can access the page with NAT access. For WWW Proxy Client, we can't. Any comments?

Thanks,

Hi

I've been testing this lately. We're seeing some odd behaviour that looks to be a combination between IE8 and something about that site. Which web browser client are you using?

Hi

I did some testing based on observed differences between the successful and failure requests.

It looks like that site relies on there being an Accept-Encoding header in the request.

Using WinGate 7 and its ability to modify requests, I found that if the Accept-Encoding header were removed, the site responds with a 404 to the request for Default.aspx.

We've also found that in some cases (not sure why) IE8 refuses to send an Accept-Encoding header. This then breaks the site for that browser.

IE7 and other browsers work fine.

So this isn't something that WinGate can fix, it's a bug (apparently) in the site exascerbated by an issue with IE8.

My IE8 on Windows XP 32 bit works fine by the way, but IE8 on Vista 64 (and perhaps some other OSes) exhibits this problem.

Hi

According to MS, IE8 will not send an Accept-Encoding header if it's connecting through a proxy and it's not configured to use HTTP 1.1 through the proxy.

So, can you make sure IE is configured to use HTTP 1.1 through the proxy? Under Tools / Internet Options / Advanced

Hi Adrien,

We are using IE 6 (too old). Is there anything else that I can do with Wingate?

Thank for your information,

Trinh

That site requires Accept-Encoding header to be sent. So it's a broken site.

If the browser won't send Accept-Encoding there's not much WinGate can do. Choices then are:

a) get a browser that will use Accept-Encoding (have you tried IE6 configured to use HTTP/1.1 through the proxy?)
b) try to get the site operators to fix their site. It's very bad practise to have a site that relies on Accept-Encoding, many things (security products) strip it out. A large number of users won't be able to use their site.

Thanks Adrien,

We go for both ways. Any clients need to access the site, they should enable HTTP 1.1 through the proxy. The website owner was informed to check their website behavior.

Once again, thank you for your support.
